Note that this information has not been updated since 1997 .. so it's likely a bit out of date. Will get to this soon!
Introduction
------------
The British Columbia Cemetery Finding Aid, Version One contains
more one hundred thousand entries.
Purpose
-------
This database is intended *only* as a "pointer" database. It
consists of the surnames, cemetery name and location of more than
100,000 entries collected from records and headstone inscriptions
associated with 141 cemeteries situated in the Province of British
Columbia and one from the State of Washington. Please note that in
some cases, some of the listed individuals may *not* be interred in
these cemeteries and such names were found in the source records or
on the headstone.
Reference Number
----------------
The REFERENCE field is used to identify the source document
and the organization that published the cemetery information. To
assist the researcher, the postal address of each source is listed
below.
Soundex Field
-------------
One of the main features and benefits of this information
base is the convenience of Soundex searches. As most family
historians soon discover, surname spellings have to be taken with
a grain of salt and creative flexibility. Electronic database
searches on the Soundex code (rather than on a single spelling of
a surname) may yield some surprising matches which would otherwise
go undetected.
Other Notes
-----------
If a name (e.g. that of a parent or spouse) is mentioned on
a stone, that name has also been included as an entry in this
database. Although that person mentioned may be buried elsewhere,
such entries may prove useful in making a family connection. The
same rationale applies for the "plot owner only" entries dating
back to the early 1900's.
The Next Step
-------------
As mentioned earlier, this information is intended only to
get you pointed in the right direction. This is offered as a
convenience to all of us 'mail order researchers' who are thousands
of miles from the `old homestead' and its genealogical treasures.
PLEASE...... when corresponding with any of the organizations
listed below, include a self-addressed envelope and sufficient funds
to cover return postage. Many of these organizations are very small
and operate on extremely limited budgets. They will not continue to
exist if researchers burden them with extra operating expenses.
Be sure to include a word about BCCFA in your correspondence
when requesting additional information or ordering transcriptions
from the organizations listed below. This feedback is instrumental
if there are to be any future releases of the BCCFA database project.
