Update of 29 Sep 2017: This article has now been replaced by our Winter 2017 article entitled John Prentice and Jean Hamilton of Carluke and Stonehouse.
Note: This article combines and replaces information which appeared in 2 earlier articles:
Using the records available from Records Office in Glascow, Scotland, and the information contained in the website of Fraser Hamilton and Anne Prentice Christie at Fraser Hamilton, and particularly their comprehensive Prentice pages beginning at Prentice , as well as much additional information provided by Arch Prentice in his email of 26 Nov 2007, we have compiled the following tentative family tree for John Prentice of Carluke, Scotland.
A word of caution: the tree is based solely on the possibility of family relationships because of similarity of names and proximaty of dates and locations. If you know of any errors, please contact us so that we may correct them.
Glasgow, Scotland records contain extensive birth and christening records for various towns in Scotland beginning in the 1600s. The first entries for the town of Carluke begin with the entries for the children of John Prentice (wife's name not given) on 28 Jan 1700. He is likely the John Prentice named by Glasgow records, as the father of the following children christened at Carluke:
- Christen Prentice, chr. 28 Jan 1700.
- James Prentice, chr. 9 Mar 1701.
- Jean Prentice, chr. 26 Oct 1701.
- John Prentice, chr. 6 Jun 1703.
- Henry Prentice, chr. 7 Aug 1703.
- Jannet Prentice, chr. 29 Jul 1705.
- Thomas Prentice, chr. 9 Jan 1709.
- Jannet Prentice, chr. 20 Aug 1710.
- Thomas Prentice, chr. 12 Mar 1710.
- James Prentice, chr. 14 Jun 1713.
- Jannet Prentice, chr. 19 Jul 1713.
- Alexander Prentice, chr. 12 Feb 1716.
- John Prentice, chr. 8 Feb 1719.
- Jean Prentice, chr. 28 Aug 1720.
B, John Prentice, aka John Prenties.
He m. Jean Hamilton. Children:
- Hendry Prenties, aka Harry? Prenties, b. c. 1670 Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire.

- Marion Printice. She married Alexander Muirhead on23 Nov 1695, in Carluke, Lanarkshire.
A. John Prentice, b. c. 1670, probably Scotland.
He m. Margaret Hamilton on 18 Sep 1698, Stonehouse. Although not yet documented, they may be the parents of:
- John Prentice, b. c. 7 Sep 1698, Scotland. . . . . . . . . . . [1]
- Andrew Prentice, b. c. 1729, Scotland. For his family, see our Fall 2002 article entitled Prentices of Stonehouse, Lanarkshire, Scotland .
1. John Prentice, b. c. 7 Sep 1698, Scotland.
He m. Marion Whitelaw and had (per IGI)
- James Prentice, b. 11 Mar 1722, Carluke. . . . . . . . . . . [2]
- Thomas Prentice, 10 Sep 1724, Carluke. . . . . . . . . . . . ]3]
- Note: There may be some uncertainty whether James, above, is the son
of John Prentice and Marion Whitelaw. That information comes from an LDS Pedigree Resource
File which shows James
as b. 1 Mar 1722, Carluke, son of John Prentice and Marion Whitelaw; it also shows that
same 1722 James Prentice as marrying Elizabeth Reid in 1740 in Carluke.
That information needs closer scrutiny for at least 2 reasons:
- That record does not cite any specific original source document, and
- James' birth date, said to be 1722, makes him some 9 years younger than Elizabeth who is given a birth date of 1713. A husband that much younger is unusual, but not unheard of.
Another researcher, suggests the possibility that James Prentice might be the son of John Prentice (b. 1684) and Margaret Fram (b. 1688) who are shown in the IGI as having a son, James Prentice, b. 6 Jun 1713 in Carluke. While it brings the birth dates of James and Elizabeth closer together, that IGI record does not cite any specific original source document showing that he is the one who m. Elizabeth.
What needs to be done is to locate an original source document which identifies the parents of the James Prentice who m. Elizabeth Reid.
2. James Prentice, b. either 6 Jun 1713 or 11 Mar 1722 (see "Note" above), Carluke. We have only the smallest bit of information about James as to his place of birth; we know only that it is said to be "near Belfast, Ireland.

Thiepval is the largest and one of the most emotive memorials to the missing from any war in which British soldiers have died. It stands in an isolated windswept position on the Somme - with absolutely no facilities for visitors and nothing to explain what happened in 1916. A high proportion of the names at Thiepval are soldiers who died on 1st July 1916 the first day of the Battle of the Somme. All that visitors find are 600 British and French graves and the names of 72,000 British soldiers carved into the stone of this massive memorial, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens

a different James Prentice (see our article about James Prentice of Beaver Co., PA which
says that James Prentice was b. in Ireland, not Scotland). That same Ancestry.com entry says that
they had a son, John Prentice, b. c. 1792, Blantyre and d. 1820, but that entry duplicates

He m. Jane McKeown, b. 1834, Dalry. Living with the family in the 1881 census is her father, William McKeown, b. c. 1807, Dalry. Children:
9.2 Norman Prentice, b. c. 1836, Edinburgh (per his children's birth certificated). His father was b. 18 May 1804 Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, but by 1851 was living Edinburgh St. Cuthbert. Norman does not appear in the 1861 or 1871 census. His absence from the 1861 and 1871 census would be consistent with his being the Norman Prentice who appears in our Spring 2003 PRENTICE NEWSLETTER article at Norman Prentice of Port Chalmers, NZ . Norman's occupation was listed as "surveyor".
The following information is provided by Rowan Gibbs email of 11 Nov 2009. It reads in part, and with some rearranging, as follows:
". . . There was no trace of a Norman Prentys in New Zealand but certainly a Norman PRENTICE and he was indeed a surveyor in the Province of Otago. He arrived in Port Chalmers (the port of the city of Dunedin in Otago) on August 20th 1860 on the ship Pladda from Glasgow, Scotland.
Norman and Rosa had a daughter Elsie Prentice born Musselburgh, Dunedin 9 Oct 1878. The birth cert gives
Normans age as 43 and Rosas as 30. [Tbey also had] a son Roland Prentice, born Invercargill 13 May 1881
Neither child was registered with a middle name
"Norman worked as a surveyor in Dunedin until the late 1870s, producing a number of maps and plans for the
Otago. Most are held in the Hocken Library in Dunedin and are listed in their catalogue http://otago.lconz.ac.nz
"The family moved south to Invercargill in 1880. Norman is recorded as owning land and went bankrupt 3 March 1883 but continued working as a surveyor.
He is listed Mataura Ensign 7 Jan. 1887 p.6 as resigning as Wyndham Town Board surveyor and a clearance auction of his household effects is advertised 5 April 1887 p.3.
In June 1887 he was gazetted as a licensed surveyor in Melbourne (Vic Govt Gazette, No.50, June 10 1887 p.1774), so the whole family presumably moved to Australia at that time.

House at 38 Byron St, Port Phillip, where Norman lived in 1891
"Norman probably died in the late 1890s and Rosa and the two children then moved to England.
Both children living with the mother in Essex in 1901 UK census [surname as Prentice]."
That Norman Prentice m. Rose Frances Nixson 4 Apr 1877 at the Anglican Holy Trinity Church at Port Chalmers, NZ. Rosa was born 10 Apr 1846 in Bayswater, London (baptised 14 Dec 1864 [sic] along with her younger brothers John Pym Nixson, born 10 April 1848, and Albert Nelson Nixson, born 16 Oct. 1849), daughter of Francis Nixson (Gentleman) and Maria(n) (née Potter) of Porchester Lodge, Bayswater. [she signs Arthur Francis wedding cert. as MariaN].
Rosa sailed to Melbourne, Australia, on the ship Clarence arriving at Port Phillip 27 Jan 1871. She travelled with her older brother Joseph Francis Nixson and the Pollon family, including Kate who married Joseph; they also settled in Otago. Rosa and Joseph sailed immediately to New Zealand on the Tararua, leaving 28 Jan. 1871 and reaching New Zealand in February.
Children of Norman and Rosa:
9.3 Elsie Pym Prentice (later changed to Elsie Pym Prentys), b. c. 1879, Otago, New Zealand, and d. 7 Nov 1960 at 67 Roland House, Old Brompton Road, London S.W.7 (death notice, Times, 9 Nov 1960, p.1).
The following information is provided by Rowan Gibbs email of 11 Nov 2009. It reads, in part, and with some rearranging, as follows:
"The information I had [about Elsie] was this from the 1966 Encyclopedia of New Zealand:
[She] has published a number of historical novels, was born in Otago and spent a few years on the stage in Australia before turning to journalism in Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and England. During the First World War she worked in the Royal Arsenal and during the Second World War in an intelligence section. Among her books about royalty and famous people are The Romance of the Queens of England, Royal Elizabeths, The Coronation Book of George VI and Queen Elizabeth, Thomas and Jane Carlyle, and Charles and Mary Lamb
"and this from a 1910 magazine:
Mrs Thornton Cook, who writes under the pen name of E. P. Prentys and Maorilandia, is doing a little work in England, and also contributing to several colonial papers. Her latest book, French for daily use, has just been published in London.
"Recently I found a copy of one of her books in the original dust jacket and on the flap it had the following note:
Elsie Thornton Cook was born in Otago, daughter of the late Norman Prentys of the Geological Survey; educated privately; became a child actor in Australia, and later a journalist in Australia, New Zealand and America. Has lived in England since the beginning of the war [i.e. World War I].
"Rosa travelled from Sydney to Victoria, B.C., Canada on the Marama in 1909, arriving 19 October, giving her destination as London and stating she had previously visited Canada (Montreal) for four days in 1908. In the 1910 US Census he is listed as living with Roland in California. She died in London 1912.
Elsie married John Thornton Cook in Hackney, London, on 21 Jul 1908. Her name given as Elsie Pym Prentys, age as 28 (b. c. 1880), and residence at time of marriage is given as Chicago. John's was shown as age 29 (b. c. 1879), insurance broker . He was probably the author of How to Work Insurance Agencies to Increase Ones Income and to Earn a Good Living. London: Guilbert Pitman, 1909. 94pp. He died Mar 1909 Holborn, London, at the age of only 30 years. (Ref: Rowan Gibbs, email, 11 Nov 2009)
John Thornton Cook appears in the 1891 census in Islington, London, as b. c. 1880, Stamford, Hill, London, son of John Williams Cook (b. c. 1849, Minories, London) and Marian Agnes Gerrish (b. c. 1851, Banbury, Oxfordshire). An Ancestor Chart for John Thornton Cook can be found at Ancestry.com .
9.4 Roland Pym Prentice (later changed to Roland Pym Prentys), b. 4 May 1880 in New Zealand and d. 26 Dec 1947 in Monterey Co., CA, at the age of 67 years.
Some years after Roland's birth in New Zealand, and before 1901, Roland and his mother returned to England before 1901 where they appear in the 1901 census in Loughton, Essex, England.
In 1902, Roland and his mother, Rosa, left England and emigrated to the United States (per 1920 census). He later appears in the 1910 acensus in Oakland, CA and 1920 San Francisco, CA census without wife or children. However, living with him in 1910 was his mother, Rosa F., b. c. 1846 in England. She does not appear in his home in the 1920 census when should would have been about 74 years of age and might by then be deceased (see 1912 death of a Rosa F. Prentys in Strand, England, below)..
Roland does not appear in the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) nor does he appear in California Death Records (CDR).
A search of St. Catherine's Index of Deaths in England beginning in 1837 showed only 2 Prentys deaths:
Since Roland's mother, Rosa F., appears in the 1910 Oakland census but not in the 1920 census, one could reasonably infer that Rosa F. may well have returned to England before 1812 and is the same Rosa F. Prentys who died in the Dec Quarter, 1912 in Strand.
The following information is from Rowan Gibbs email of 11 Nov 2009. It reads, in part, and with some rearranging, as follows:
...Roland P. Prentys is a thorough colonial. He was born in Invercargill, Southland, in 1881, and spent his childhood in Dunedin and various parts of New Zealand. For 12 years or more, before business took him across the water to the States, he was resident in Victoria, Australia. His intention is to return shortly to his native land, where he hopes to make his name equally prominent... -- Otago Witness 10 June 1908 p.58
Local Shooters Establish A Worlds Record - With a score of 1.131, made in an indoor revolver match against the Belleville revolver club last Thursday, the San Francisco team established a worlds record. Five men took part in the shoot, thereby making an average of a fraction better than 226. Nothing like this record has been made before and the San Franciscans are now recognised as the champion revolver shots of the world. The following marksmen took place in the record breaking match

He served in WW1 as a private in 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles and then as a 2nd Lieut. in the 3rd Royal Sussex Regt, Royal Field Artillery (M.I.D. 1917), unmarried, profession engineer. Rowan Gibbs email of 12 Nov 2009 provides the following additional information:
His WW2 U.S. draft card states married, living Belvedere, California, employed by National Lead Company in San Francisco. Died Monterey, California, 26 Dec 1947.
Roland m Margaret Mesfield on 16 Apr 1921 (age 21, b. c. 1900), Sausalito, Marin Co., CA per Rowan Gibbs citing Marin Journal newpaper item. However, he also notes that there is a Margaret N. Prentys on the California Death Index shown as b. 5 Nov 1876, mothers maiden name Mahoney, and who d. 9 July 1965 in Marin It is unclear if this the same Margaret since she would have been 45, not 21, at the of the 1921 marriage.
10. Euphemia Prentice, b. 18 Jun 1788 Carluke. By email of 17 Feb 2001, Ann Bernstein relates that Euphemia d. 2 Mar 1865 (SR) in Carluke and that she m. James Graham on 2 July 1808 (OPR). Euphemia's parents are identified in her death record which was witnessed by her husband, James Graham (per Ann Bernstein, email, 23 Feb 2005).
There is a record of a James Prentice who m. an Isobel Baillie on 7 Nov 1789,
Cambusnathen (per IGI and Ann Bernstein, email, 23 Feb 2005). Their presently known children
are (per IGI and Ann Bernstein, above):
11. James Prentice, chr. 4 Sep 1774, Carluke.
He m. Janet Schaw, 1798 in Carluke (per Anne Hamilton, 51 Merkland Drive, Kirkintilloch, Glasgow, Scotland, Pedigree Resource File). Children per Anne Hamilton and IGI):
11.1 Margaret Prentice, b. 14 Mar 1811 Carluke (per LDS) and d. 1878, Carluke per
Ancestry.com .
She m. m. Thomas Bow c. 1837, Lanarkshire, Scotland, per LDS. He was b. 1815, Glasgow,Scotland, and d. in Carluke, Scotland. An Ancestor Chart for him can be found at Ancestry.com . Children per Ancestry.com :
12. Archibald Prentice, chr. 15 Mar 1789, Dalziel.
He m. Catherine Mackie on 8 Feb 1813, Dalziel. For his descendants, see our Spring 2000 issue on James Prentice of Dalziel , #10.
13. James Prentice, b. 8 Mar 1794, Carnwath.
He married Jane Euston. She was b. c. 1794 in Lanarkshire and d. 1841/1855. Children:
14. Thomas Prentice was was born on 5 May 1799 in Blantyre. He died in 1841/1845 in Scotland.
He m. Agnes Hunter, b. c. 1800-01. Emigrated to American with her children, William and Margaret, in 1858 aboard the "Resolute" per.Joanne Watts email of 8 Mar 2015, below. Agnes did not remarry and died 16Jan 1889 in Manyunk, PA, per Joanne Watts email of 14 & 16 Mar 2015.
14. Agnes Hunter b. c. 1800-01, m. Thomas Prentice b. 5 May 1799 on 30 Jan 1822. We believe that Agnes arrived US at NY NY, 26 Oct 1858, from Scotland on Ship Resolute. Passenger list also shows William Prentice and Margaret Prentice (her children). This would indicate why they no longer show on the Scottish census.
In a US Civil War Pension application by Agnes Prentice, for deceased son William Prentice, Agnes sent to Scotland for a copy of her marriage certificate to Thomas Prentice b. 1799 as part of her evidence to show that William was her lawful son. In the pension records is a copy of an original document, sent from the church in Blantyre indicating the minister in 1822 was John Hodgson, verifying the marriage of Agnes Hunter and Thomas Prentice on 30 Jan 1822. In doing so she demonstrates that she, the Agnes in the US, is really the same as the Agnes that m. Thomas Prentice b. 1799. (Thomas' birth date of 1799 is specifically mentioned).

We start with Larry Kelly's information:
1. James Hogg was b. c. 1660-1690 in Scotland and migrated to Ireland, perhaps the Londonderry area. He had 1 or more children, including:
2. John Hogg was b. c. 1690-1712 in Ireland. Per handwritten note, John Hogg emigrated from Ireland to MA in 1752, married and then went to NH. Robert Hogg had two sons:
2a. Alexander Hogg, b. 27 Jun 1732 Londonderry Twp, Rockingham, NH.
He m. 27 Dec 1754, Hampstead, Rockingham, NH, Abigail Atwood, b. 13 Aug 1735, Essex, MA.
3. Robert Hogg was born 25 Feb 1732 in Londonderry, Ireland and died on 23 Jan 1795 in New Boston, NH. He emigrated with his parents to America in 1752 at the age of 20 years. Robert was a patroit of the War of the Revolution and participated in the Battle at Bunker Hill. Robert Hogg was married to Margaret Gregg and had eleven children. In 1804 Four of the brothers changed their name to Prentiss, supposedly after a relative o and one brother, Robert changed his name to Huntley. Abner remained a Hogg and refused to change his name, saying he was born a Hogg, lived as a Hogg and he was determined to die a Hogg.
The brothers changing their name to Prentiss petitioned the New Hampshire Legislature to change their surname to Prentiss. The change was approved by act of the legislature on December 14, 1808.

1. Hugh Pentice was born in Nova Scotia and his parents are said to have been born in Scotland. Hugh's birth date is not known. (Source: Audrey Prentice Roy, E-mail, 9 Apr 2000).
Hugh Prenticee married Isabella Irving. Hugh and his family headed west, settling eventually in Seattle, King Co., WA. Known children:
2. Daniel Prentice, also called Daniel Irvine Prentice, was born 19 Jun 1867 in Quebec, which would be Matapedia Valley, Quebec, next to Restigouche, Campbellton County, and and d. 27 Dec 1928 at Jardine Brook, in Victoria Co., New Brunswick. Audrey Roy and George Russell have provided the following material from his proposed History of the McDavid Family, one member of which married into the Prentice family.
Daniel Prentice, his parents, and his brothers and sisters have their ancestral roots in Scotland. They kept going west and crossed to Seattle, Washington where the family settled. Daniel later moved north to Canada in 1867. He did not like living in Seattle (perhaps too much rain?) and moved back eat to Campbellton, New Brunwsick, Canada, where he worked building railroad tracks for the railroad.
Daniel Prentice married Margaret MacDavid 15 Apr 1896 in Restigouche Co., New Brunswick. She was born 1875 in Matapedia Valley, Quebec, dau. of Deanna McDavid of McDavid's Mtn., Quebec. Margaret d. 10 Mar 1953 in Bath, New Brunswick. Daniel's children, all born in the Metapedia Valley, were:
George Russell says they had anan adopted daughter: Sarah Jane Prentice. It is unclear if she is Sadie or Blanche above, or is an additional daughter.
3. Hugh Prentice. He might be the Hugh Prentice shown in the 1920 Snohomish Co., WA census. That county abuts King County to the north. Hugh was b. c. 1873 in "Quebec," probably Quebec Province in Canada. His wife, Blanche Knight, daughter of Cornelius and Mary Knight, was b. c. 1883 in WI. They appear in the 1930 census in Three Lakes, Snohomish Co., WA.
The birth places of their children indicates Hugh was living in Wisconsin and that
they moved from WI to WA sometime between 1909 and 1911.
Since his first child was b. c. 1902, Hugh might be the Hugh Prentice in the 1900
Phillips, Price Co., WI census who was b. Mar 1872 in "Canada (Eng)".
Hugh may be a brother to Blanch Prentice, b. May 1882 in WI, who is also a
boarder in Phillips in the 1920 census, but it is unclear if it is the same
boarding house.
He may also be a brother to Alexander Prentice , b. 1887 who also appears in
the 1900 Phillips census.
Children of Hugh and Blanche (per 1920 census):
Rod passed away peacefully with his family by his side on March 24, 2010.
Rod was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and cooking. He loved going for long drives on every back road in Snohomish County. He survived cancer in 1991. Rod had a strong spirit and everyone who was lucky enough to know him knew he had a great sense of humor.
Rod was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and May Prentice.
He leaves behind his life companion of 26 years, Anne Speary; his brother, Ronald Prentice and wife, Korby; his sons, Greg Prentice and wife, Carrie, Todd Prentice and wife, Cari; his daughter, Cheri Zimmerman and husband, Edward; stepsons, Charlie Speary, Rory and Mike Watkins; grandchildren, Erica, Ryan, Briet, Hannah, Eddie, Amber, Tylor, Jacob and Zachary.
There will be a celebration of his life 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, April 3, at his brother's home, 8214 85th Ave. SE, Snohomish, WA.
4. George Maxwell. Prentice, b. 1897 and d. 1952. He m. Etta McNaughton, b. 1897 and d. 1961. George worked for the RR as Station Master at Jardine Brook. They had 11 children:
By 2010, Robert and Alice had 21 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Most of the family
still live on the Niagara peninsula in Ontario, Canada.
Jean Prentice Martin, July 9, 1928 - October 19, 2010: MARTIN, Jean - After a lengthy and courageous struggle with osteoporosis at Niagara Gardens on Tuesday October 19, 2010.

"I am interested in New Zealand born novelists (of whom there are a surprising number) and have been trying for some years to get reliable biographical information on a writer listed by the Library of Congress as THORNTON-COOK, Elsie Prentys, 1889-1960, and by the British Library as both that and as PRENTYS, Elsie Pym, 1879-. I was sure they were the same person, despite the differing names and birth dates.
"In 1908 [then living in Alameda, California, he participated in] the 20 year Pistol Champion of America.

That Euphemia was identified in her death record as the dau. of Isabella (Bailley) Prentice.
We have very much enjoyed the opportunity to review the Prentice Genealogy as we have worked to validate one particular branch, and have found some significant overlap. But we find some discrepancies between what youve published, what our research shows and what our family history indicates. Below is a summary of our findings and some questions for your review. We appreciate any direction you can provide.
Note: At
Ancestry.com a George Prentice is shown as b. 16 Jan 1835 , Barrhead, Renfrewshire rather than
