The following 1925 newspaper article, provided by Chuck Prentice's email of 24 Aug 2001, gives some biographical information about him and his family:

Source, from the original newspaper article published in the 'The Midlothian Advertiser' dated Friday 16th March 1925.

Most married people expect to celebrate their silver wedding some day, but the pleasure is not given to all. A few have the special joy of celebrating their golden wedding. A diamond wedding is only met with at rare intervals, but a ruby wedding is such a unique event that a generation of people may pass away and never have seen one.

West Calder has had the distinction of a ruby wedding being celebrated this week, and we would convey the hearty congratulations of the whole community to Mr and Mrs Joseph Prentice, Glebe Park, on having attained to this notable landmark in their long and happy married life.

Mr Prentice will be 90 years of age next month, and Mrs. [Harriet Pollock] Prentice will be 89 in the month of May. The Rev. David Ogilvie, Free Church minister of Dalziel, married them 70 years ago, at Motherwell, on the 2nd March 1855.

Mrs. [Harriet Pollock] Prentice is a native of Bannockburn district, where her father was colliery engineer at Jerviston. Mr. Prentice is a native of Motherwell, and as a young man he was also employed in connection with engines at Motherwell. After his marriage he was invited to take a period of training in the engineering shop of the Summerlee Coal Coy, and he did so. On completing his training, he removed to Kenmure, outside Glasgow, and was later engaged as colliery engineer at the sinking of three pits at Knightswood. In January 1871, he came to West Calder as colliery engineer to Young's Oil Coy, and remained in the Company's service for the period of 51 years, retiring in April 1923, at the advanced age of 88 years.

When Mr. Prentice came to West Calder, Mr Young's patent rights had expired and small oil works were springing up all over the district. Fell's Works had been built at Gavieside, but many of the workmen had to live in wooden huts until Gavieside houses were built. The Dunnet Works at Hermand were also in operation. Mr Dunnet one of the proprietors was a Glasgow man, and he was very keen to secure Mr. Prentice's services as engineer. Mr Morton was colliery manager for Young's Oil Coy. at that time, and he was successful in inducing Mr Prentice to come to West Calder as his colliery engineer.

Mr. Thos. Prentice succeeded Mr. Morton as mining manager, and throughout his long period of service Mr. Joseph Prentice remained as the chief colliery engineer. He was later under Mr. Armstrong, Mr. Shearer, and Mr. William Caldwell, and throughout his long and active life has been associated with nearly all the mining developments in West Calder, and also at Ingliston and Newliston.

Mr. and Mrs. Prentice celebrated their silver wedding in 1880. In 1905, when they celebrated their golden wedding, a largely attended meeting was held in the Masonic Hall, when Mr. Thomas Prentice, on behalf of a large number of relatives, friends, and well-wishers, presented them with a purse of sovereigns.. A feature of the golden wedding celebration was the presence of the lady and gentleman who had acted as bridesmaid and groomsman at the marriage. .The diamond wedding was celebrated quietly at their own home in 1915,when members of the family presented them with a purse of sovereigns.

On Monday last the aged couple had the unique privilege of celebrating their ruby wedding, when they were the recipients of hearty congratulations and gifts from relatives, and many well-wishers in the village and district.

From the marriage there was a family of twelve, seven sons and five daughters, and of these four sons and three daughters are still alive [in 1925]. Three of the sons James, Alexander, and John—are in South Africa, and Archibald is an engineer in this country. Of the daughters, one resides in Larkhall, one in Winchburgh, and the youngest is married to Mr. John Hope, the assistant works manager to the Burmah Oil Coy. at Rangoon. Counting children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, the number is slightly over a hundred, and of these 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren are in South Africa. Considering their advanced age, Mr. and Mrs. Prentice are remarkably healthy and well. They have all their faculties, and Mr. Prentice still indulges his hobby for engineering by making household articles of brass and iron at the lathe he has fitted up beside his home. We hope they will continue to have good health in what still remains of a long and happy married life.

Thomas arrived in New Zealand aged 20, as a single man, on the ship "Waimea", arriving in Port Chalmers, Dunedin, on 20 Sep 1874 as an assisted emigrant. He listed his occupation as 'joiner', and his birthplace as Motherwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland. It had cost 14 pounds and 10 shillings for his passage. Thomas spent some time working in a coal mine at Papakaio, then he moved to Kurow and took up farming and some carpentry work. The Cyclopaedia of New Zealand Vol.4 entry mentions that Thomas had served a 4 year apPrenticeship as a carpenter prior to emigrating.

He married an Irish Catholic girl, Nora Tuohey, at the Registrar's Office in Dunedin on 7 May 1879. Thomas was Presbyterian, and he and Nora evidently argued over religion constantly.

Family stories say that the girls were baptised Catholic and the boys Presbyterian and the family would go to separate churches on a Sunday. The family took up land in the Kurow area and established a Dairy. The family sent milk to Kurow Creamery after it was established in 1902. Thomas was also a prominent member of the Ancient Order of Foresters, a benevolent lodge. This organization still exists today, as a 'Friendly Society'. Appendix 1: Descendants of Jane Montgomery Prentice:

By email of 10 Mar 2002, Joy Hodgson has provided us with the following information on the descendants of Jane Montgomery Prentice:

1. Jane Montgomery Prentice, , b. 13 Feb 1885 (per Carol Ward, email, 31 May 2008 citing certificate in her possession) in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland d: 31 August 1936 in Brisbane, QLD, Australia, of breast cancer. Nominated to come to Australia by John James Rooney on 20 April,1911. left London on 21/08/1911 listed as "housewife", arrived in Brisbane aboard the "SS Torilla" on 10/10/1911. Also listed on manifest was a daugher "Joan" age 7/12 Infant Female Daughter?? "Joan" did not arrive with her mother!! Monument inscription Toowong Cemetary "My wife & our mother Jane Montgomery d. 31 August, 1936, age 52."

Jane m. John James Rooney on 28 October 1911 in Brisbane, QLD, Australia. He was b. 10 Mar 1887, Renfrewshire, and d. 30 July 1960 in Brisbane, QLD, Australia, of tuberculosis. John was the son of James Rooney (b. c. 1855, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland) and Agnes Welsh (b. c. 1854, Paisley, Renfrewshire and d. 1919 in Crosslee, Renfrewshire) (per 1891 Scotland census, Carol Ward and Melville Ward, email, 24 May 2008). Carol Ward's email of 31 May 2008 adds the following:

"His father James Rooney born about 1855 states on his marriage cert. his father was also James and his mother Bridget McMmahon, this James is showing up in census 1861 as a lodger 34 years old an a lodger with James Hammell and his wife Catherine McMahon, also James born about 1855 as their nephew so I gather young James is there with his father James born 1827 it also states that James senior is unmarried so he may have only partnered Bridget McMahon as on 1871 census young James then 16 years is still with his aunt also his sister Mary aged 14 years living with them no parents so I gather James senior is the son of Thomas Rooney and Margaret MacCormick and father to young James. by young James marriage certificate in 1881 his parents are both deceased.

Children of James and Agnes per Carol Ward's email of 28 Sep 2008:

    1. Patrick Rrooney, b. 1877 and d. 1943 Scotland. He m. Isabella Graham 1900.
    2. Bridget Rooney, b. 1881 and d. 1953. QLD. She m. Daniel Williams 1908, Scotland.
    3. Helen (Ellen) Rooney, b. 1883 and d. 1933, Scotland.
    4. James Rooney, b. 1885, Scotland.
    5. John James Rooney, b. 1877 and d. 1960, Qld. He m. Jane Montgomery Prentice in 1911 in Qld.
    6. Elizabeth Rooney, b. 1889, Scotland.
    7. Alexander Rooney, b. 1892 and d, 1979,Qld. He m. Agnes Kelly, 1914 Qld.
    8. Mary Rooney, b. 1897 and d. 1960 Qld. She m. Dugald McCulloch in 1919.

John had other brothers and sisters: Patrick Rooney, born 1881, Bridget Rooney, born 1882, Ellen Rooney, born 1884. Alexander Riibet Rooney, born 1882, and Mary Rooney, born 1897.)

In the 1861 census the 1855 James Rooney is called a nephew, apparently of James Rooney, apparently single and b. c. 1827, Ireland. James parents and siblings are set out at Ancestry.com . That gives the names of young James' grandparents, Thomas Rooney and Margaret MacCormick, but without sufficient information to know which of James's brothers is the young James' father.

There has been conflicting information about John's date and place of birth/

  • One source has said that John was, b. 7 February 1886 in County Down, Ireland, and later moved to Crosslie, Renfrewshire, Scotland, and that he was m. 28 Oct 1911 in Brisbane, QLD, Australia, an d. 30 July 1960 in Brisbane, QLD, Australia.

  • However, by email of 22 Oct 2007, Carol Ward identifies herself as a granddaughter of John James Rooney. She relates that she has in her possession a documents showing John was b. in Renfrewshire, Scotland, and not Ireland. She has a copy of the Marriage and Death Certificates of John's father, James Rooney, showing James' marriage and death in Renfrewshire

In any event, it is unknown when he came to Australia. (Possibly about 1910). First known address was c/- Helidon Spa (natural spring water bottling company, may have been at the source in Helidon near Toowoomba or at the offices in Brisbane). Address 1913/14 - 15 Sexton Street, Petrie Terrace, Brisbane. Unfortunately he became an alcoholic in his later years and the family basically disowned him. Sister - Ellen is from Paisley, Scotland. Relationship ended with: Death of one spouse.

Raised by her Maternal Grandparents as her parents. Jane was not able (by mother's insistance) to take Janet to Australia when Jane immigrated. Not sure when (if) Janet was told the truth.
