Update of 15 Jun 2006: This material has now been included in our later Spring 2003 article about John Prentice of Carluke, Scotland .
1. James Prentice was probably b. c. 1770-80 at an unknown location. He m. Janet Schaw c. 1798-99 and had the following children:
- Janet Prentice, b. 1799 Carluke, Lanark, Scotland
- Elizabeth Prentice, b. 2 Jul 1801, Carluke.
- Thomas Prentice, b. 1803, Carluke. . . . . . . . . . [2]
- Jean Prentice, chr. 3 Aug 1806, Carluke.
- James Prentice, b. 16 Aug 1808, Carluke. . . . . . . . [3]
- Margaret Prentice, chr. 31 Mar 1811, Carluke.
- Isobel Prentice, b. 2 Jan 1814, Carluke.
- Andrew Prentice, b. 2 Jan 1814, Carluke.
- Margaret Prentice, b. 1816, of Lanark, Scotland
2. Thomas Prentice, b. 1803, Carluke. He m. Mary Meikle. They had a son:
- James Prentice, b. 9 Nov 1833 and d. 13 Dec 1916. He m. Marion Steel who
was b. 1840 and d. 1895. Son:
- Thomas Prentice b. 1867 and d. 22 May 1931.
- James Prentice, b. 13 Oct 1897 and d. 16 May 1936. . . [4]
- Thomas Prentice b. 1867 and d. 22 May 1931.
3. James Prentice, b. 16 Aug 1808, Carluke and d. 1875, Carluke. He m. Jane Cassels on 14 Jun 1840, Carluke. We do not know for sure if he had any children, but it seems likely that he is the father of:
- James Prentice, b. c. 1840, Carluke. . . . . . . . [5]
4. James Prentice, b. 13 Oct 1897 and d. 16 May 1936. Son:
- James Prentice, b. 17 Sep 1925 and living in 2003.
- James "Jim" Prentice, b. 4 Nov 1954. He lives between Hamilton and Glasgow (per emails, 4 May 2003, 7 May 2003). He relates that his father has a notebook entry written by his grandmother which states that a piece of crockery given to her by Isa Brown originated from the house of Janet Shaw. He suggests that she may be Janet Schaw, #1, above, and that it may substantiate his lineage as indicated above.
5. James Prentice, b. c. 1840, Carluke. He is a farmer, age 40, shown in the 1881 Carluke census. His occupation is shown as Limestone Miner. Also shown is his wife, Mary, b. c. 1843 at Lanark, Lanark, and children:
- Elizabeth Prentice, b. c. 1873, Carluke.
- Isabella Prentice, b. c. 1874, Carluke.
- James Prentice, b. c. 1878, Carluke.
- Mary Prentice, b. c. 1880, Carluke.
Although we have identified the 1840 James as the son of James Prentice and Jane Cassels, there is a chance that he might be the James Prentice who is a son of John Prentice and Janet Scoular of Carluke.
In reviewing the IGI, there seems to be at least 3 possibilities as to the identities of James Prentice's parents:
- James Prentice might be the James Prentice who was b. 28 Aug 1774, son of Thomas Prentice and Marian Carmichael of Carluke. For their ancestry, see John Prentice of Carluke in our Winter 1998 issue.
- James Prentice might be the James Prentice who was b. 28 Feb 1779, son of James Prentice and Janet Lockhart of Carluke. For their family, see Fn 1.
- James Prentice might be the James Prentice who was b. 23 Nov 1782, son of John Prentice and Betty Tod of Carluke. For their family, see Fn 2.
