Joan A. Prentiss
Joan Aldrich Prentiss of McKinleyville, Calif., died peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of July 7, 2018, attended by the loving members of her immediate family. She was 86 years old.
Joan, born in Walpole on Feb. 4, 1932, moved with her family to Claremont, Calif., in the late ’60s and finally settled in McKinleyville in the late ’80s. After her move to California and successfully raising her family of four children, she completed her education with a master’s degree in psychology, a source of great pride as a first in her family, and a road to providing for herself and family as a counselor in Northern California.
Joan is survived by her immediate family; her husband, Harley, and her children, Michael, Paul, John and Janet. Her two sons, Paul and John, both had families of their own providing her with four beloved grandchildren: Paul and his wife, Debbie, with Jason and Stephen; and John and wife, Tina, with Addison and Alia. Always a serious competitor herself, Joan took special joy in watching both of her West Coast grandkids play their way to soccer championships over the years. She also fostered a very special grandmother relationship with her good friend Kris’ two children, Sam and Jake. Her willingness to listen deeply combined with her boundless curiosity helped her accumulate a large extended family of precious friends wherever she lived.
Joan died as she lived: curious to the end and fiercely pondering the meaning of this life, always wondering and excited about what was coming around the next corner. We send her on this final journey with selfish sorrow at the enormous chasm her passing leaves in each of our lives, but happy that she was able to live her life on her own terms right to the very end. She will always be in our hearts.
