NORWICH -- Lorraine Elizabeth (Prentice) Reed, 81, of Old Salem Road, Norwich, and Jupiter Point Road, Groton, died Sunday evening at the Bayview Healthcare Center after a brief illness.
She was born on August 13, 1919 in Norwich, CT, the daughter of Leonard Charles Prentice Sr. and Florence (Weller) Prentice.
She married the late Burrell Fay Reed on July 1, 1946 at the Greeneville Congregational Church in Norwich. He died October 24, 1973.
She graduated from Norwich Free Academy in 1937, and was a 1942 graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, receiving a BS in Art Education, and a 1965 graduate of Eastern Connecticut State College, receiving her Masters in Education. She received an Honorary Fine Arts Degree from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1990.
She worked as an art teacher at Decatur Senior High School in Illinois from 1946-47, and returned to Norwich where she taught Art in the Norwich Public School System for over 33 years, retiring in 1979.
She was a charter member and past President of the Delta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an International Honorary Sorority for Women Educators, where she also served on the State Executive Board. She was also a Life Member of the CT Education Association, and served on the CEA State Retirement Commission, and was a member of the CT Retired Teachers Association.
She is survived by her son Gregg Prentice Reed and his wife Deborah of West Hartford, CT, a daughter Pamela R. Munro and her husband, Gerald of Salem, CT; a brother Leonard C. Prentice Jr. of Murphy, NC; a sister, Betty P. Guile of Auburndale, Fla.; and 3 grandchildren, Douglas and Denise Reed of West Hartford, and Kennedy Munro of Salem, CT.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she is predeceased by a sister, Shirley Prentice Pierce.
Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 on Friday July 26. A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Greeneville Congregational Church. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery. Memorial donations in Lorraine Reed's memory may be made to Hospice of SE CT, 179 Gallivan La., Box 902, Uncasville 06382, or to the Children's Saturday Class Scholarship Fund, C/O the Norwich Art School at The Norwich Free Academy. The Church and Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem St, Norwich, has charge of arrangements.
