William Elisha Prentice, LL.B. 1888.

Born February 22, 1857, in LeRoy, N.Y.
Died February 26, 1929, in Batavia, N.Y.

Father, John Prentice, a farmer in LeRoy, Pawnee Rock, Kans., and Stafford, N.Y.; son of Elisha and Sarah (Howard) Prentice, of Stafford. Mother, Sarah Ann (Randall) Prentice; daughter of Hiram and Nancy (Hanna) Randall, of Stafford.

LeRoy Academic Institute; student at Cornell 1876; principal of schools in Stafford and South Byron, N.Y., and of Churchville (N.Y.) Union School and Batavia Union High School 1876-1881; school commissioner of Genesee County, N.Y., 1881-87; B.S. University of Rochester 1884, M.S. 1888; studied at Columbia 1885-86 and in Yale School of Law 1887-88; admitted to the bar in 1885 and practiced law in Batavia from 1885 until retirement in 1928; counsel for comptroller of New York State 1900; member of 5th Separate Company ("The Batavia Rifles"), 31st Brigade, New York National Guard, about 1882; attended First Presbyterian Church, Batavia.

Married March 29, 1893, in Almont, Mich., Helen Louise, daughter of Alexander and Isabella Irvin (McBean) McHardy. One daughter, Sarah Isabel (B A. Elmira 1916), the wife of Antony Constans (B A. University of Grenoble 1914; Ph.D. Harvard 1926), an instructor in French at Yale 1926-28.

Death due to arteriosclerosis. Buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Batavia. Survived by wife, daughter, four sisters, Mrs. Jennie Louise Kelsey, of Minneapolis, Mrs. Lewis S Henion, of Batavia, Mrs. DeWitt Sixbey, of Boston, and Mary J. Edgerton, the wife of Charles A Edgerton (B A. Williams 1891), and four brothers, David K. Prentice and Wendell H. Prentice, both of Stafford, Stephen R. Prentice, of Kansas, and Colonel James Prentice, U.S.A., ret., of Batavia and Coconut Grove, Fla.
