Frank A. Prentice Jr., 77, of Kalkaska, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2018 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City where he had been a patient. Frank was born Feb. 11, 1941 in Kalkaska to Frank A. Prentice Sr. and Anna May Hemminger, both of whom preceded him in death. He graduated from Kalkaska High School in 1959. On June 30, 1962 Frank married the love of his life Carolyn M. Ramsey of Kalkaska. To this union seven children were born. Frank loved his family, loved having them near as he taught them respect and responsibility.
Frank always made time for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was employed for several years at Bear Archery in Grayling and several local auto body shops before opening his own place, “Franks Body Shop,” where he established a well-known and respected business. Having a passion for classic cars, he restored many for others and several for himself. Two of Frank’s favorites were a 1954 Chevrolet for his wife and a 1950 Ford custom. He loved to go camping and take family vacations. In the summer he enjoyed attending stock car races. Once he raced along with his brother Jim at the former Hi Pointe Raceway in Kalkaska. He also loved reading westerns and war history.
Frank will be lovingly remembered by his wife Carolyn; children: Jeanine (Joe) Jennings, Judy (Rich) Roys, Tony, Tim (Suzanne), Kenneth, Scott and daughter-in-law Cheryl; 35 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; siblings: James (Bonny) Prentice, Ronald (Julie) Hinds, Donald (Louise) Hinds, Bonnie (Tom) Kalina, Richard (Storm) Hinds, Jerry Hinds, and Robert (Brenda) Hinds; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins; best bud cousin, Bob Fitzgerald and many friends. He was preceded in death by one son, Jeffrey; and siblings: Goldie Grambau, Orange Hinds Jr., Pearl Wind, and Sherman Hinds.
A celebration of Frank’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 at 953 Kettle Lake Road in Kalkaska. Memorial contributions may be made in Frank’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Shriners Hospital for Children in Chicago. Arrangements have been entrusted to Kalkaska Funeral Home.
