Alice Prentice

b.1920-10-10; d.2015-12-10; Estherville, IA; Obits For Life
(contributed by Scott Prentice on 2015-12-12)

Alice Y (Yates) Prentice, the daughter of Arthur and Elva (Minor) Yates was born October 10, 1920, Estherville, Iowa. She passed away Thursday, December 10, 2015, at the age of 95 years 2 months. Alice died at Good Samaritan Home. She was prepared and ready to leave her earthly life in anticipation of living eternally in Heaven with her Lord, God, and Savior, Jesus Christ.

June 19, 1937, Alice was united in marriage to Harlan Emory Prentice in Spencer, Iowa; where both their children were born: Daughter, Marcia Kay, in 1939 and Son, Eugene David, in 1941. During World War II they lived in Sausalito, CA, to work in the Shipyards. Emory was a pipe fitter and Alice managed the employee cafeteria. Upon returning to Iowa, Alice & Emory bought and ran a hotel, restaurant in Marathon, Iowa. In 1952 they moved to Sioux City, Iowa, (where both Marcia and Eugene were married). 1956 moved to Huron, SD, where Alice managed Ladies Fashion Shop. They relocated to Sioux Falls, SD, in 1961, where Alice served as assistant in Emory's insurance business while taking care of her granddaughters, Teresa and Renee Nimmer, until Marcia's recovery from a serious illness. Due to Emory's failing health, in 1972, Emory and Alice returned to Estherville, Iowa, in 1972 to be closer to her family. Alice worked 13 years at UNIVAC in Jackson, Minnesota.

In every town they lived, Alice was very involved and active in the Methodist Church. Alice became an Eastern Star in 1952 and for more than 50 years was involved in Star work including serving as Worthy Matron at same time Emory was Worthy Patron. Alice was a VFW Auxiliary member.

For decades, they loved living on Spirit Lake and graciously shared their lake home with countless friends and family. You can’t remember Alice without picturing her enjoying her family at the lake and the glorious solitude of lake life; reading, cooking, baking, reading scripture and bible studies, crocheting, knitting, sewing, and playing Bridge. She was devoted to helping her family and friends; just as Alice's mother had done.

Alice is survived by her daughter, Marcia Kay (Arthur) of Brookfield, WI, and son, Eugene David (Betty) Prentice of Port Ludlow, Washington, WA. 6 grandchildren: Teresa Nimmer (Mark) Vogel, Renee Nimmer, Sarah Nimmer (Jason) Soloninka, David (Wendi) Prentice, Michelle (Shawn) Tinoosh, and John Prentice.12 great-grandchildren: Thomas Ratas, Elizabeth Ratas, Lorice Ratas, Nicholas (Jasmine) Ratas, Alicia Vogel, Natalia Soloninka, Alice Prentice, Hannah Prentice, David Prentice, Robert Prentice, Arianna Tinoosh, and Isabela Tinoosh. Alice will be greatly missed by her brother, Arnold Yates and very special nephews and niece: Douglas (Char) Yates, Susan (Doug) Bueltel, Terry (Pat) Prentice.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband, siblings and spouses; Glen (Ruth) Yates, Neva (John) Higgins, Ruth (Carl) Sawyer, Faye (Russell) Hostetter, Edna (Del) Webster, sister-in-law, Joyce Yates (wife of Arnold Yates) and numerous nieces and nephews. Alice’s great-granddaughter, Marissa Renee Ratas, and grandson, Arthur-David Prentice Nimmer also sadly preceded their grandmother in death.

Alice leaves a lasting imprint on each life she touched.... just ask someone who ever ate one of her pies!
