Dean Prentice, 85, passed away on December 20, 2014 at Monte Vista Estates in Monte Vista, Colorado.

Dean was born on January 28, 1929 in Monte Vista to Marie (Roberts) and Caryll Prentice. After graduating from Monte Vista High School and attending Colorado State University briefly he was asked to help with a dry cleaning business in Rocky Ford. He married Nancy Cornelius May 2, 1950 and had three children. After returning to Monte Vista he worked in the dry cleaning business and later became the owner and operator of Dean’s Laundry and Dry Cleaners.

Throughout the years Dean was active in the community in a variety of organizations including Boy Scouts as a leader, First Presbyterian Church, Jaycees, Monte Vista Chamber of Commerce, Master Mason of Monte Vista Masonic Lodge, Charter member of the Monte Vista Elks, Hermit Lakes Recreation Inc. as well as several outdoor, hunting and fishing organizations. His community service during retirement included delivering Meals on Wheels to shut-ins. He was appointed to serve on the Monte Vista City Council and wrote an entertaining column for the Monte Vista Journal called "How’s Fishing?" Many will remember Dean for his love and respect for the outdoors. He was not only skilled at many different outdoor activities but passed on those skills to family, friends and anyone who asked.

Dean is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Nancy of Monte Vista, children - Suzanne (Rick) Myers of Gering, Nebraska, Jim (Pat) Prentice of Monte Vista, Bob (Donna Graves) Prentice of Durango, eight grandchildren and several great and great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Arlene Campbell, brothers, J. C. and Bill and daughter-in-law CiCi Rock.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Monday December 29, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Strohmayer’s Funeral Home in Monte Vista 205 S. Broadway, Monte Vista, CO 81144 Memorials can be made to Hermit Lakes Recreation Inc. to be used to support fishing and recreation or to the donor’s choice. My grandfather interesting fact his parents thought he was going to be a girl and he was to be named Deanna something Prentice but apparently he was a boy and they never gave him a middle name. Also killed sixty elk in his lifetime 49 by rifle and 11 by bow and arrow. Also at about 12 years old his older brothers and dad fought in world war 2 which left him at home to take care of his mom and sisters.
