Harm Gaiken

#30, Harm Gaiken, is probably the son of Gaike Janssen Friederichs and Anke Margaretha Harms.

Born in 1806, perhaps in Munkeboe, Ostfriesland. Died 1886, perhaps in Peoria, IL.

Harm's place of birth is unknown, but may be at or near Munkeboe, Ostfriesland where his children were born.

Harm is one of at least known children of Gaike and Anke: Harm, Meenke, Jan, Maria and Geeske, all of whom were married with children of their own.

There are also some additional clues about possible kin. Munkeboe is served by the church at Engerhafe which records the birth of his children from 1836 through 1858. During that same time, Gaycke Gerken and Gretje Janssen Gaycken had at least 5 children of their own, but the exact relationship to Harm is not yet known. There were also several other families in the parish with one of the spouses named Gaiken, or some spelling variation of it:

    1. Geike Gayken & Antje Lammerts (Moorhusen)
    2. Jan Gayken & Margaretha Alber (Engerhafe)
    3. Franke Gaiken & Geike Bohlen (Munkeboe)
    4. Behrend Gaiken & Anna Janssen (not given)
    5. Dirk Gaiken & Hiske? Heier (Munkeboe)
    6. Antje Geiken & Evert Dirksen (Engerhafe)
    7. Behrend Geiken & Antje Dieken (Munkeboe)
    8. Frerk Geiken & Johanna Valentin (Munkeboe)
    9. Dirk Geiken & Heske Gerdes (Munkeboe)
    10. Frauke Geiken & Geike Bohlen (Munkeboe)
    11. Dirk Geiken & Eke Dollman ( Munkeboe)
    12. Geike Geiken & Estina Harms K--- (Moorhusen)
    13. Geike Geiken & Eselina Weeldreier (Munkeboe)

We don't know when Harm came to America, but there is some evidence that his son, Geike, immigrated in 1860. If so, Geike would have been 15 at the time and would probably have been in the company of his parents, Harm and Thalke. Also, we don't know where Harm and his family initially settled in America. It may have been in Peoria. Some of his children lived there, and Harm is buried at the Lutheran Cemetery in Peoria.

He married Thalke Aggen Haaren on about 1835 in Munkeboe, Ostfriesland..
