----------

1. Thomas Prentice. We do not have the date and place of his birth, but he was likely b. c. 1700-1715. The place was likely at, or within a few miles of, Borley, Suffolk, where his children, William and Elizabeth, were born.

Ian Prentice advises that a John Prentys/Prentis lived in nearby Cabendish in 1613 and 1617 who had sons John Prentys, bap. 25 Nov 1613 and Thomas Prentis, bap. 6 Jan 1617, both at Cavendish (a short distance NW of Borley). That was about 90 years before Thomas 1700-1715 birth, so that John or Thomas might be Thomas' grandfather or great-grandfather.

Thomas married Alis/Alice Cranfield c. 1735 in Colchester St. Peter, Essex and bur. 13 Oct 1786 in Long Melford which lies less than 2 miles NE of Borley.   Borley and Long Melford lie about 25 miles NNE of Chelmsford and about 15 miles NE of Shalford and Great Saling where the ancestors of Valentine Prentice have their roots in the 1500s. In terms of time and mobility, a movement of 25 miles or less in 250 years is inconsequential.

Thomas Prentice and Alice Cranfield had at least three children:

  1. William Prentice, chr. 25 Jun 1738, Borley (per Ian Prentice, 14 Feb 2001)
  2. Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1736. . . . . . . [2]
  3. Elizabeth chr. 30 Sep 1739, Borley (per Ian Prentice, above). She may be the Elizabeth Prentice shown in the IGI as m. William Coker on 20 May 1766 at Borley.

We know that their daughter, Isabella, emigrated to Australia at some date before 1887, but it is not yet known whether Henry, his wife Sarah, and their other children also emigrated to Australia. The 1891 census in England does not list Henry or Edwin.

However, it might be that Henry and his wife died in England because the Excerpts from the National Burial Index list Henry Prentice buried 23 Aug 1887 aged 51years (the right age given his birth at 1836) and Sarah Ann Prentice being buried 21 Oct 1883 (no age), both at St Peter and St Paul Kedington, Suffolk. Although the 1881 Census has them living in Surrey in 1883, Sarah Ann and Isabella Diver were both born in Kedington (per Judy Dickson, email, 25 Mar 2005).

Location: Mikra British Cemetery is situated aproximately 8 kilometres south of Thessaloniki, on the road to the airport, in the municipality of Kalamaria. Access is via the main entrance on Vryoylon Street, directly opposite the communal cemetery of Kalamaria.

Historical Information: At the invitation of the Greek Prime Minister, M. Venizelos, Salonika (now Thessalonika) was occupied by three French Divisions and the 10th (Irish) Division from Gallipoli in October 1915. Other French and Commonwealth forces landed during the year and in the summer of 1916, they were joined by Russian and Italian troops. In August 1916, a Greek revolution broke out at Salonika, with the result that the Greek national army came into the war on the Allied side.

The town was the base of the British Salonika Force, and it contained, from time to time, eighteen general and stationary hospitals. Three of these hospitals were Canadian, although there were no other Canadian units in the force. The earliest Commonwealth burials took place in the local Protestant and Roman Catholic cemeteries, and the Anglo-French (now Lembet Road) Military Cemetery was used from November 1915 to October 1918. The British Cemetery at Mikra was opened in April 1917, remaining in use until 1920. The cemetery was greatly enlarged after the Armistice when graves were brought in from a number of burial grounds in the area.

MIKRA BRITISH CEMETERY now contains 1,810 Commonwealth burials of the First World War, as well as 147 war graves of othe nationalities. Within the cemetery will be found the MIKRA MEMORIAL, commemorating almost 500 nurses, officers and men of the Commonwealth forces who died when troop transports and hospital ships were lost in the Mediterranean, and who have no grave but the sea.
