Update of 3 Aug 2005: By email of 3 Aug 2005, Judith Dickson suggests that Henry "Harry" Prentice may be the same person as Harry Diver Prentice whose parents are Henry Sheppard Prentice and Sarah Ann Diver who are #22 in our article about Prentices of Glemsford and Langley, England . We do, however, note that the Harry Diver Prentice in that other article is shown with an 1866 birth year rather than 1861.

We are helping Joyce Harvey in tracing her Prentice roots. Here is what we have so far.

Henry "Harry" Prentice was b. c. 1865, perhaps in the London area, and d 24 May 1946, age 81, per his headstone at Katoomba Cemetery *ref: John Garthe, email, 4 Jan 2012)..

According to his Marriage Certificate in Joyce Harvey's possession, on 4 Jun 1885 in the Parish of Philip Hasubitt(sp?), Surrey, Henry m. Nellie "Ellen" Margaret Easterbrook. We have conflicting information about her birth:

One source says she was b. 1866-7, London, England.
Ancestry.com says she was b. c. 1858 in Shobrooke, Devon, England and also contains an extensive Ancestor Chart for her.

At the time of their marriage they were neighbors; he lived at 30 Brook St. and she lived at 24 Brook St.

Harry and Ellen emigrated to Australia sometime between 1885 and 1896. For some reason they changed their surname to Beale around 1906, perhaps in the Mosman, Sydney, area. Harry's occupation was a painter, perhaps a house painter. Harry was in the home guards in 1906 to 1908 "Little Sirius Cove" Mosman Bay. Nellie may have d. 1925 At Katoomba and Harry in 1926, both under the name of >b>"Beale." Their known children included:

Florence Prentice, b. 1889 and d, 16 Jan 1945. Florence married Harold George Garthe in 1909, Sydney, but lived in Katoomba. Florence/Florrrie d. there on 17 Jan 1848, age 58 and Harold d. there on 7 Aug 1944 at the age of 62 (b .c. 1882) per their headstones at Katoomba Cemetery *ref: John Garthe, email, 4 Jan 2012)..
Maud Prentice, b. 1892. She d. in 1915.
Violet Prentice, b. 1896 and d. 1 Apr 1972. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]
Dorothy Prentice, b. 1905
Gladys Prentice, b. 1905

2. Violet Prentice, b. 1896 in New South Wales and d. 1 Apr 1972 in Boolaroo, NSW and is bur. at Sandgate.

She m. 1st Albert Cecil Garthe on 14 Jul 1915. He was the son of John Conrad Garthe and Alice Simms, both from Goulburn, NSW.He was a fireman and a brother to Florence's husband, Harold. Albert was b.1887 and d. 1942 in Sydney. Children, some of whom, other than Lesley, later spelled their surname as "Garth.":

Horace Garthe, b. 1916.
Maude Garthe, b. 1918, and d. in the 1980s.
Alfred Garthe.
Lesley Garthe, b. 1925 and d. 1991. He m. Patricia Rachel Baker in 1951. They had 3 children:
1. John Garthe, b. 1952. He m. Fifi Neophytou, b. in Cyprus (per his email of 15 Feb 2010). Daughter:

Violet m. 2nd Cecil Robert Harvey. He was b. 1911 and d. c. 1992 in Brisbane. Children:

Who are Henry "Harry" Prentice's Parents?

One of the clues we have as to the identification of Henry's parents is found in his Marriage Certificate in Joyce Harvey's possession. In that Certificate, Henry's father is identified as Henry Prentice.

We then searched the IGI to see if we could find a Henry Prentice, matching the date and place of birth of Henry/Harry, who had a father named "Henry." Although there may be other Henry's who are not listed, a search of the IGI discloses a Henry Caleb Prentice, chr. 26 May 1861, Hounslow, London.

He is the son of Henry Prentice, chr. 4 Jan 1824, St. Peter, Woking, Surrey (per IGI), and his wife, Charlotte, Charlotte, b. c. 1825, Misenden, Buckingham. They appear in the 1881 census where his occupation is given as "Horsekeeper." In the 1881 census they lived at No. 1, Clarence Place, South Side, Lambeth, Surrey, England. Children (per 1881 census and IGI):

William Henry Prentice, chr. 26 Aug 1849, Hounslow, London (per IGI and Ancestry.com). He is probably the same person as William H. Prentice, Horsekeeper, shown in the 1881 census at 45 Broad St., Lambeth, with his wife, Frances Williams, b. c. 1851, Bishops Castle, Shropshire, England, and children:
1. Arthur Prentice, b. c. 1869, Lambeth.
2. Walter Prentice, b. c. 1871, Lambeth, and d. 1944, Southwark, Surrey. He m. Sophia Letitia Cannon on 30 Aug 1891, Lambeth, London. She was b. 11 Jul 1870, Earl St. Alb any Rd., London, and d. 1943, Camberrwell, London. Children:
  1. Edith Annie Prentice, b. 16 May 1898, London, Surrey, and d. Jun 1974, Epping Forest. 1898 1974

Samuel Springall Prentice, chr. 15 Jun 1856, Hounslow (per IGI). He does not appear in the 1881 census, but he may be the Samuel Prentice, b. in Lambeth, who appears in the 1891 census in Lambeth as a "driver (omnibus) groom" with his wife, Elizabeth. No children are shown.
Caroline Prentice, b. c. 1858-9, Lambeth, Surrey (per census) and chr. 25 Jul 1858, Hounslow, London (per IGI).
Henry Caleb Prentice, chr. 26 May 1861, Hounslow, London (per IGI). He is probably the Henry Prentice, b. c. 1861-2, Lambeth, Surrey (per census).
Charlotte Prentice, b. c. 1865-6, Lambeth, Surrey (per census) and chr. 12 May 1865, Hounslow (per 1881 census).
Samuel Prentice, b. c. 1867, Lambeth, Surrey.
John Prentice, b. c. 1868, Lambeth, Surrey. He may be the John Prentice, b. c. 1869 who appears in the 1901 Lambeth census as a "Carman Contracters" with his wife, Mary, b. c. 1872, Lambeth, and children:
1. Caroline Prentice, b. c. 1891, Lambeth.
2. Charlotte Prentice, b. c. 1894, Lambeth.
3. John Prentice, b. c. 1897, Lambeth.
4. Emma Prentice, b. c. 1900, Lambeth.
Arthur William Prentice, chr. 7 May 1869 (per IGI). He may have d. before 1881 as he does not show up in the 1881 census

Lambeth, Woking and Hounslow are all in the greater London area and within a few miles of each other. Additional investigation is needed to determine whether this is the correct family.

Who are Henry "Harry" Prentice's Grandparents?

If Henry "Harry" Prentice's father is Henry, b. c. 1824, Woking (above), then his grandparents, shown in the IGI, would be Henry Prentice, b. c. 1790-1802, and Caroline. Henry and Caroline also had a daughter, Caroline Prentice, chr. 29 Oct 1826, St. Peter, Woking.
