John Prentice of Cambusnethan

John Prentice of Cambusnethan, Scotland
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 1999 and Revised: 17 Dec 2006

The 1861 census of Cambusnethan, Scotland, shows the following family:

1. John Prentice was b. c. 1810-1811 in Cambusnethan. He was a farmer at Thornbush Farm, possibly Wishaw. Scotland.

He m. Ann, b. c. 1808-1809, Kilocks, Ayrshire (per 1861 census). Children per 1861 Cambusnethan census:

  1. John Prentice, b. c. 1846, Cambusnethan. At home in Cambusnethan in 1861 census.
  2. Marion Prentice, b. c. 1849, Cambusnethan, scholar. At home in Cambusnethan in 1861 census.
  3. James Prentice, b. c. 1849, Cambusnethan, scholar. At home in Cambusnethan in 1861 census.
  4. Margaret Prentice, b. c. 1851, Cambusnethan, scholar. At home in Cambusnethan in 1861 census.

Who are John's Parents?

It seems likely that John is probably John Prentice, chr. 7 Jul 1811, son of Alexander Prentice and Cicilia Haddow of Cambusnethan. Glasgow records show 2 different marriage records for Alexander and Cicilia:

  • 24 Jul 1807, Carluke.
  • 25 Jul 1807, Cambusnethan.

Other siblings of John, and children of Alexander and Cicilia, shown in Glasgow records are:

  • John Prentice, chr. 7 Jul 1811, Cambusnethan.
  • Alexander Prentice, chr. 11 Jul 1813, Cambusnethan.
  • Mary Prentice, chr. 13 Aug 1815, Cambusnethan.

Who are John's Grandparents?

Although only a guess at this point, Alexander may be the Alexander who was b. 28 Nov 1784 at Cambusnethan, son of Alexander Prentice and Agnes Dalziel. If Alexander and Agnes have other children, they are not shown in Glasgow birth and christening records.
