Donald Prentiss of Charlottenburgh, Canada
Fall 1999 and Revised 13 Feb 2001
CarolAnne Prentice Chepurny has provided us with information that Donald Prenties purchased several parcels of land in Charlottenburgh, Ontario, Canada in the period 1786-1789.
Donald is likely the same person as Donald Prentiss who shows up on an Ontario list of "Loyalists victualled at New Johnstown" on 31 Aug 1786. New Johnstown is today's Cornwall which lies a few miles southwest of Montreal and on the Canadian border just north of Massina, St. Lawrence Co., NY. It lists Donald's family as follows:
Because of the dates of Donald's land purchases in Charlottenburgh, he may be related to Daniel Prentice who moved to Charlottenburgh from Tryon Co., NY, and about whom we wrote an article in our Spring 2001 issue.
- 1 man
- 1 woman
- 2 females over 10
- 2 females under 10
Unfortunately, a check of our PRENTICE book does not show any Donald. Even worse, a check of the IGI shows only 2 named Donald, one in VA and 1 born 3 Feb 1828 in Burlington, Otsego, NY. And, also unfortunately, American census records did not begin until 1790 so we cannot further pinpoint Donald's location in Tryon County, if he came from there.
