Update of 15 Jun 2000: By email of 15 Jun 2000, Christine Hadden advises that Thomas Prentice is the son of Archibald Prentice and Catherine Mackie who are mentioned in our Spring 2000 article about James Prentice of Dalziel . See now that other article where Thomas in #12. That article replaces this article where Thomas in #12.
1. Thomas PRENTICE was b. 2 Apr 1820 in Dalziel and d. 19 Apr 1893 in Dalziel. Thomas, a coal pit laborer, is shown in the 1861 Cambusnethan census as a coal pit laborer, then res. at 128 Main Street. Also appearing is his wife, Jean/Jessie. Both are bur. in the Dalziel Old Manse Graveyard.
He m. Jean Lahore, b. c. 1817 at Dalziel and who also d. at Dalziel at an unknown date. Children:
- Archibald Prentice, b. 4 Feb 1844, Dalserf. He m. probably
Mary Ann McIldowie of Annan, b. c. 1844. He appears in the
New Monkland census in 1871 in Clarkston and was a joiner in the paper
mill. Probable children:
- Thomas Prentice, b. 1868, Motherwell.
- Maryann Prentice, b. 1870, New Monkland.
- Alexander Prentice, b. 29 Mar 1846. He is called a coal miner in the 1861 census.
- John Prentice, b. 29 Jan 1851, Dalziel. He appears in the 1861 census.
- Jane Prentice, b. 27 Jul 1852, Dalziel. Died on 28 June 1874 at 132 1/2 Main Street Wishaw (Parish of
Cambusnethan), age 22 years. She is called a "scholor" in the 1861 census. She m. William Muir, an
"engine driver" in 1874. Son:
- John Muir. b. c. Feb 1874 and d. 15 Oct 1874, agee 8 months.
