By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2005 and Revised 10 Jun 2008

Update of 2 Nov 2009: This article has now been replaced by our Winter 2009 article entitled Thomas Prentice of Scotland and Quinnimont, Fayette Co., WV .

1. George Prentice was b. c. 1844, Govan, Renfrewshire, Scotland, and d. in Hamilton in 1916 (per 1861 census and Christine Hadden, email, 30 Oct 2009) He first appears in the 1861 census in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, as a nephew in the 21 Cathcart St. home of James Dicke (b. c. 1805, Kileara, Stirlingshire, Coal Miner) and his wife, Janet (b. c. 1805, Newtownays, Ayrshire). Also shown in the home was Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1846, Govan, also called a nephew and probably George's brother.

George next appears in the 1871 census living at 16 Cathcart St., Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, with his wife and family, and was living in Rutherglen in 1872 when his son, Arthur, was born. Woodside apparently is that community that lies about 25 km SE of Glasgow and perhaps 1 km south of Crossford.

We searched the 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 census and no George Prentice appears with a wife named Elizabeth (below). It is not yet known whether they emigrated to the United States.

He m. 1st Elizabeth Johnston on 25 Jun 1869, Rutherglen, Lanark, Scotland. She was b. c. 1846, Rutherglen and d. 1886 (per Christine Hadden, email, 30 Oct 2009) She was the the dau. of Jane Johnston, b. c. 1831, Ireland, who was living with them in the 1871 census. She does not appear in the 1881 census.

James d. 25 Mar 1935 in Amigo, Raleigh Co., WV. Place of Burial was Bishop, WV. His place of residence at that time was Bishop Tazewell Co., WV. He was a Miner. The "Informant" on James's Death Certificate was William Prentice, probably a brother or son.

James does not in the 1881 or 1891 Scotland census, but does appear in the 1901 Scotland census in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, as a Coal Miner living at 121 Eddlewood Rows with his wife and family. James and his wife and family emigrated to the U.S. in 1904 according to the 1930 census when he would have been about 32 years of age.

He is likely the James Prentice who appears in the 1910 census on Sewell Mtn., Fayette Co., WV and almost certainly the James Prentice who appears in the 1920 census in Clear Fork, Raleigh Co., WV where is birth date is given as c. 1873. Still later, they appear in the 1930 census in Big Creek, McDowell Co., WV.

He m. Charlotte Weis(?). She is probably the Charlotte who appears in the 1910 census on Sewell Mtn., Fayette Co., WV with her husband, James, although his birth date is given there as c. 1850. She was living at the time of James' death in 1935. Children per 1910 census:

  3. James Prentice, b. c. 1907, WV. At home in 1920. He appears, unmarried, in the 1930 census in Weston, Lerwis Co., WV. Unclear whether in SSDI. He may be the James Prentice shown in WV Prentice Deaths as b. c. 1908 and d. 21 Jan 1934 in Lewis Co., WV.

He m. Anna, b. c. 1903, Scotland. Children per 1930 census.

  2. Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1925, WV. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [5]

Who are George Prentice and Elizabeth?

The only clue we have so far is that George, b. 1844 in Govan, Scotland, may be a brother to Thomas Prentice , b. c. 1840 in Dalry, Ayr, Scotland. Both emigrated to the United States about the same time and both settled in West Virginia about the same time. Thomas also had a brother, William, who in 1907 was living in Glendale, Lawton Co., WV.
