2. John Prentice, b. c. 1854, Hammersmith. At home in 1861 and 1871 census. He may, or may not, be the John Prentice shown in the 1881 and 1891 Hammersmith census as b. c. 1857 with his wife, Mary, b. c. 1859 Fulham, Middlesex (in the 1891 census his wife is shown as Elizabeth, b. c.1859, Hammersmith), and children:

  10. Constance S. Prentice, b. c. 1899, Burham, Kent. At home in 1901.

4. (perhaps) James Prentice, b. c. 1864, Hammersmith. James first appears in the 1881 census as a patient in an institution and would account for his not appearing with a family. He is probably the same person as the James Prentice who appears in the 1901 census of Fulham, Hammersmith, as a General Labourer with his wife, Rose, b. c. 1868, Hammersmith, and children:

  1. Sarah Prentice, b. 1884, Hammersmith, London.
  2. John Prentice, b. 1889, Hammersmith, London.
  3. Annie Prentice, b. 1891, Hammersmith, London.
  4. Katherine/Kate Prentice, b. 1894, Hammersmith, London.
  5. Lillie Prentice, b. 1896, Hammersmith, London.
  6. Elsie Prentice, b. 1900, Hammersmith, London.

Other Hammersmith Prentices

1. Caroline Prentice appears in the 1881 Hammersmith, London, Middlesex census living at 1 Union Court. She was b. 1818, Barnet, Hertford, England. Living with Caroline was daughter:

  1. Alice Prentice, b. c. 1860, Hammersmith, a Needlewoman. At home in 1881.

Caroline's relationship to John is unclear; she would have been only 15 in 1833 when John was born, perhaps too young to be his mother, and probably too old to be an earlier wife.

2. Thomas Prentice appears in the 1881 Hammersmith census living at 4 Sheens Lodgings. He was b. c. 1838, Hammersmith. With him was his wife, Fanny, b. c. 1841, Hammersmith. His relationship to John is unknown, but, being 5 years younger, he might be a younger brother to John. Thomas does not appear in the IGI.

3. William Prentice, a Brickmakers Labourer, appears in the 1881 Hammersmith census living at 11 Hunt St. He was b. c. 1835, Essex. William does not appear in the IGI. William's relationship to John is unknown, but, being 2 years younger, he might be a younger brother to John. No wife is shown for William, but shown is William's son:

  1. James Prentice, b. c. 1867, Kensington, Middlesex. He does not appear in the IGI.

Who are John Prentice's Parents

Although there is a small difference in birth dates, John may be John Prentice shown in the 1841 Chelmsford census, Rainsford Lodge, as age 11, b. c. 1830 (birth places not specified in the 1841 census). Although the formatting is somewhat unclear, John Prentice seems to be living with Elizabeth Bartlett, age 55 and b.c. 1786, and perhaps a maternal grandmother.

They, in turn, are living immediately adjacent to Frederick Prentice, b. c. 1816, Gardener, and his wife, Unice/Eunice, b. c. 1816. Also living with Frederick and his wife is Edward Hornsby, b. c. 1816, and perhaps Unice's brother. Frederick and Unice/Eunice would have been only about 14 when John was b. c. 1830, so perhaps John's father is brother to Frederick.

It is of interest to note that both John Prentice, and his son, John Jr., both named a son "Frederick".
