Peter Prentice of Chelmsford, Essex, England
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2003 and Revised 23 Apr 2011

We are helping Jean Holt and Alfred Eves in tracing her Prentis roots. Here is what we have so far:

1. (omitted)

2. Peter Prentis, was b. c. 1787 and bur. 30 Aug 1831, age 44 years, per Pamela Eve, email, 24 Dec 2010. Pamela Eve had suggested that he may be the Peter Prentis chr. 13 Nov 1803 in Chelmsford, but that is disproven by Peter's burial record, above.

In the 1913 bap. record of his son, William, he is called "a victualler of Chelmsford." In the 1815, 1817 and 1820 bap. of his children he is called "a victualler of Duke Street." A victualler is traditionally a person who sells food or other provisions, similar to a grocer, and in particular British usage can be used to mean a person licensed to sell alcoholic beverages. Pamela Eve's email of 24 Dec 2010 identifies Peter Prentis' pub as "The Swan" on Duke Street, later demolished and a new building built and occupied by the "Lion & Lamb," a 1950s building and still later called "Duke's night club."

In the 1822 bap. of his children he is alled a "gardener of Duke Street." The 1825 bap. of his dau., Louisa, calls him a "gardener of Gallows Lane."

    1. Alice Prentice, b. c. 1860, Hammersmith, a Needlewoman. At home in 1881.

Caroline's relationship to John is unclear; she would have been only 15 in 1833 when John was born, perhaps too young to be his mother, and probably too old to be an earlier wife.

    2. Thomas Prentice appears in the 1881 Hammersmith census living at 4 Sheens Lodgings. He was b. c. 1838, Hammersmith. With him was his wife, Fanny, b. c. 1841, Hammersmith. His relationship to John is unknown, but, being 5 years younger, he might be a younger brother to John. Thomas does not appear in the IGI.

    3. William Prentice, a Brickmakers Labourer, appears in the 1881 Hammersmith census living at 11 Hunt St. He was b. c. 1835, Essex. William does not appear in the IGI. William's relationship to John is unknown, but, being 2 years younger, he might be a younger brother to John. No wife is shown for William, but shown is William's son:

    1. James Prentice, b. c. 1867, Kensington, Middlesex. He does not appear in the IGI.

    Who are Peter Prentice's Parents?

There may be at least 2 possibilities:

    1. James and Elizabeth Prentice: Pamela Eve's email of 24 Dec 2010 indicates that "The Swan" was previously licenses to James Prentice in 1808-1809 and to Elizabeth Prentice in 1810-1811 before being licensed to Peter in 1812-1820.

Pamela Eve's email of 24 Dec 2010 also shows 2 baptisms of interest:

      • A baptism of 26 Aug 1808 of Elizabeth Mary, dau. of James and Elizabeth Prentice.
      • A baptism of 3 Oct 1810 (b. 6 Mar 1810) of Rosetta, dau. of James and Elizabeth Prentice.

From the foregoing, one might reasonably infer that James may have died and ownership passed to his wife, Elizabeth, and that Elizabeth then passed ownership to, Peter, either her son, or James' brother.

    2. John and Sarah Prentice: Pamela Eve's email of 24 Dec 2010 show 2 Chelmsford burial of interest:

      1. John Prentice, Duke Street, was b. c. 1748 and was bur. 22 May 1821, age 73 years.
      2. Sarah Prentice, Duke Street, was b. c. 1747 and was bur 24 Jan 1830, age 83.

John and Sarah would have been 39 and 40 respectively when Peter was b. in 1787
