Update of 4 Feb 2009: James Prentice is #262ii in our John-3 eBook. That eBook now replaces this article.
1. James Prentice was b. Dec 1864 in PA. He does not appear by that name in the 1870 or 1880 census, but does appear in the 1900 New Milford, Susquehanna Co., PA census as a Farmer with his wife and family.
He m. Ada M. Aldrich on 31 Aug 1894, Nw Milford (per IGI). She was b. either Jun 1866, PA as were both of her parents (per census) or b. 2 Jan 1867, Susquehanna Co., PA (per IGI). She d. 27 Feb 1908 in Scranton, PA. She is probably the Ada Aldrich shown in the 1870 census in Brooklyn, Susquehanna Co., PA, as b. c. 1866, PA, dau. of Norris Aldrich and his wife, Harriet. An Ancestor Chart for Ada can be found at Ancestry.com .
Sons of James and Ada:
- Lewis J. Prentice, b. Jun 1886, PA. Not in SSDI. Not in 1930 census.
- William G. Prentice, b. Apr 1891, PA. Not in SSDI. Not in 1930 census.
They are not in the 1870, 1880 or 1930 census, nor in the IGI.
The only clue we have so far is from the 1900 census which shows both of his parents as b. in PA.
The 1870 census in New Milford, Susquehanna Co., PA (where James lived in 1900), shows the following family:
- John Middaugh, b. c. 1837, PA.
- Jane Middaugh, b. c. 1841, PA.
- Luke T. Prentiss, b. c. 1859, NY. He is probably a brother to Jas Q. Prentiss, below)
- Jas Q. Prentiss, b. c. 1865, NY. Although the place of birth (NY) is different and the surname spelling different, it seems likely, because of the New Milford location, that he is the James Prentice who is the subject of this article. It also seems likely that the Middaughs are kin.
- Sarah E. Middaugh, b. c. 1870, PA
A search of the 1900 census shows the following Prentices living in Susquehanna Co, PA within only a few miles of James and his family:

In addition, William Prentice is shown by the 1860 census living in Harmony, Susquehanna. He had several children, and could have had a further son, James, who was b. 1864. However, William was b. in NY and not PA.
