Edwin A. Prentice of NY, NE and NM

Edwin Prentice of NY, NE and NM
By Linus Joseph Dewald, Editor
Summer 2001 and Revised 11 Dec 2010

Update of 24 Aug 2002: Edwin A. Prentice is the son of Parley Alanson Prentice and a descendant of Thomas Prentice, The Trooper, whose roots we have traced back additional generations.

This article consolides and replaces the earlier article found in:

We are helping Royal Prentice, Jennifer Prentice and Nancy Lanni in tracing their roots. Here is what we have so far:

1. Edwin A. Prentice was b. c. 1831 or 1838 in NY and d. 1899. He was a butcher by trade.

Edwin apparently was married sometime between 1855 and 1867 to Ellen Hooker. Edwin and Ellen had 2 or more children, including:

  1. Mary Prentice. Married and lived in Otego or Oneonta, Otsego Co., NY (per William Prentice, email, 7 May 2001).
  2. William Floyd Prentice, b. c. 1868, NY. . . . . . . . . . . . [2]

Edwin m., 2nd, Florence Louisa Bowe on 29 Mar 1876 in Milford, Otsego Co., NY. Flora was the dau. of Seneca William Bowe and his 2nd wife, Euretta Yager and was b. 11 Jul 1859 in NY and d. 1923. She was the granddaughter of Edward Bowe IV (b. 18 Jan 1781 in Thetford, Orange County, VT and d. 26 Apr 1859 in Hartwick, Otsego County, NY) and Peninah Baker (per Royal Prentice's email of 14 Nov 2000 and Dave Bowe's email of 21 Aug 2002. (See Fn. 4).They had a son:

  1. Royal A. Prentice, b. Jul 1877 in NY and d. 1958 in NM. . . . . [3]

Sometime between 1878 and 1880, Edwin, Flora, William and Royal moved from NY to Lancaster County, NE where they appear in the 1880 Lancaster County, NE census. About 1887, Edwin and his family decided to move to California, but, passing through New Mexico, they were so impressed with the beauty and bounty of NM that they stayed. Edwin homesteaded but soon went broke and he took up butchering again. The family moved to Las Vegas, San Miguel Co., NM where Flora and Royal, but not William, appear in the 1900 NM census. After Edwin d. in 1899, his wife, Florence Louise Bowe, m. 2nd V. A. Raymond.

2. William Floyd Prentice, b. c. 1868, NY (per 1880 Lancaster Co., NE census). (Fn. 1).   The exact date and place is unclear:

  • It might have been 2 Nov 1866,
  • or perhaps 1867, perhaps in Maryland Twp., Otsego County, NY,
  • or perhaps Aug 1869 at Fly Creek, Otsego County, NY (per the 1900 census). Fly Creek lies quite near Cooperstown.

According to Nancy Lanni's email of 23 Apr 2001, quoting Charles "Bud" Prentice, William Prentice went to "Texas" in his youth for a time, then had returned to Otsego Co., NY about 1886 (See also Fn. 3). William Michael Prentice, a grandson (below) says that in his later years, William lived with the grandson's family during the winter, then return to his own house for the summer. However, in January 1959, he returned to his own house early and perished on 9 Jan 1959 at the age of 92 in a house fire caused by wood from a woodstove at Frankfort, Herkimer, NY where he had lived alone for many years.

Additional information about William and his in-laws can be found at a website by Dan Touse for (DTouse@catskill.net) William Prentice

William married, as her 2nd husband, Eda Mary Bliss , right, b. 6 Dec 1868 in Otego, Otsego, NY and d. 3 Dec 1946 in Ilion, Herkimer, NY. She was the daughter of William D. Bliss and Celestia Ann Chase. Eda appears in the 1920 Herkimer Co., NY census as "Edith." Eda has 3 children by that prior marriage: William Pierce (Nancy Lanni's grandfather), Bessie Pierce and Ben Pierce (See also Fn. 2). Children of William and Eda:

  1. Floyd Prentice, b. 11 Sep 1905. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [4]
  2. Glenn Royal "Robert" Prentice, b. 28 Dec 1907. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [5]

Fn. 1:   We have no clear documentation that William Floyd Prentice is Edwin's son, but there is a very strong set of circumstantial evidence which supports that conclusion:

  1. Edwin had a son, William F. Prentice, who was b. c. 1868 in NY. He was living with Edwin's family in the 1880 NE census, but does not appear with the family in a later census.

  2. William Prentice went to "West Texas" in his youth for a time, then returned to Otsego Co., NY where he later lived and married. That is consistent with Edwin's son, William, not appearing with his family, or alone, in the later NM census.

  3. By email of 2 May 2001, Royal A. Prentice II relates that one of Royal Prentice's children, Lawrence Howard Prentice, b. 18 Sep 1924, is still living in Albuquerque, and he just mentioned a few days ago that he and his father made a trip to NY in his youth to visit a Prentice relative (who may have been a publisher of some sort) in Fly Creek.

  4. Fly Creek, where William lived, lies only about 10 or 11 miles north of Milford where Edwin married Flora Bowe.

  5. Both Williams have the same middle initial, "F"; William Floyd Prentice lived in Fly Creek and William F. Prentice appears as Edwin's son in the 1880 NE census.

  6. Both Williams were born in NY at about the same time.

  7. Another bit of circumstantial evidence, mentioned by Nancy Lanni in her email of 22 Apr 2001, tending to corroborate William as Edwin's son is that one of William's sons was Glenn Royal Prentice while Edwin had a son named Royal A. Prentice "Royal" was an unusual name and would indicate that William may have named one of his sons after an uncle.

Fn. 2:   Eda's first marriage was to John William Pierce on 19 Oct 1890 at Burlington, Otsego, NY. He was the son of Alfred Kinne Pierce and Catherine Bianca Herdman. Eda and John's family homestead was on Fitch Hill in Fly Creek. Fly Creek, the village, is essentially at the bottom of Fitch Hill. A few miles from that is Toddsville where Eda's brothers, William and Wilburn lived and where their family may still be living. A few miles from Fly Creek in a different direction is Hartwick, where the Bliss family homestead was located.

William Pierce, Eda's first husband, was working at Remington Rand in Ilion before his death and ran the first molding machine for Remington Rand which made typewriters and office machines and was owned and operated by Jimmy Rand.

Eda's boarding house was never at Fitch Hill. It is unclear whether there was an actual boarding house or whether William Prentice was merely boarding with Eda to help support her little family after her husband's death. It is also unclear whether he was boarding with her in Ilion while she was married or later at East Frankfort.

We found an interesting and amusing recollection by Charles Prentice which was forwarded to us by Nancy Lanni's email of 8 May 2001. It reads, in part, as follows: "...the only thing I remember about Otego [NY] is that when I was a kid we always went on Memorial Day and decorated all the family graves. After we did Fly Creek we always ended up in Otego visiting some people who seemed like they were two or three hundred years old. I don't have a clue what their relationship was to Grandpa but I do remember they were someone's aunts and uncles. They weren't necessarily named Prentice or Pierce although they might have been, I just don't know."

Fn. 3: Charlie Prentice's email of 12 May 2001 relates that Charlie's father told Charlie that William Floyd Prentice returned from Texas in the year they were starting to build the First Methodist Church in Ilion NY. A History of Ilion, on their web page, says the church was started in 1886. That would make William about 18 or 19 when he returned from Texas.
