Update of 8 Sep 2008: Charles James Prentice is #14.1 in our Winter 2000 article entitled The Prentices of Glemsford, etc., Essex, England . That article now replaces this article.
With the aid of Ian Prentice, we are helping Amanda Benwell in tracing the ancestry of her Prentice roots. Here is what we have so far:
1. Charles James Prentice was born at an unknown date and place, but perhaps b. c. 1863-1873. He was living in Great Cornard, Suffolk about 1890. Great Cornard lies only 2-3 miles southeast of Sudbury, and only about 12-15 miles northeast of Shalford where Valentine Prentice had his roots.
He m. Eliza/Elizabeth Hartleyand may have died in the June quarter, 1910, in the Sudbury area, aged 66 per Ian Prentice who also points out that ages given at death are notoriously unreliable.
The children of Charles and Elizabeth included:
- James Charles "Charles" Prentice, b. 20 Mar 1893, Chiclow(?) Lodge, Great Cornard, Suffolk (per Birth Certificate).
- (perhaps a daughter who d. in infancy) Prentice. Ian Prentice indicates that she might be Deborah Kate Prentice, b. in the Dec. quarter, 1893, but he did not locate a record of her dying in infancy.
- Frederick William Prentice, b. in the June quarter, 1892 in the Sudbury area. He d. 1973. Fred served in
the army in WW I, The Black & Tans, and suffered a gunshot wound. Fred m. Charlotte Collins, in Lambeth
Registry office 1914 and lived in Lambeth and Battersea, moving to Vauxhall after W.W.II. Charlotte died
in 1983. Children:
- Fred Prentice.
- Dennis Prentice.
- Desmond Hugh Prentice. He m. Lillian May. They are Amanda Benwell's grandparents.
It seems probable that James Charles Prentice, b. 20 Mar 1893, is the son of Charles Prentice (b. c. 1868, Woolwich, Kent) and Eliza (b. c. 1870, Diss, Norfolk). They appear in the 1891 census in Sudbury Civil and Ecclesiastical Parishes, Sudbury, Suffolk. They already a child, Robert Prentice, b. c. 1890, Sudbury. The Sudbury location is consistent with the parents' marriage in the Sudbury area, as well as the birth of their 3rd son, Frederick, in 1892 in the Sudbury area. For a less likely possibility, see Footnote 1
The 1868. Woolwich, Charles Prentice is likely the Charles Prentice who appears in the 1881 Sudbury St. Peter, Kent, census as b. c. 1868, Plumstead, Kent, which lies less than a mile east of Woolwich. He was the son of Mary A. Prentice (b. c. 1834, Long Melford, Suffolk), a widow with 3 children living at home.
Footnore 1: We found another less likely possibility. In a check of the IGI, we found a Charles James Prentice, chr. 13 Dec 1850 at St. Clement Danes, Westminster, London, England, son of Henry and Mary Prentice. Ian Prentice has located in the St. Catherine's House index a birth record for a Charles James Prentice who was b. in the September quarter, 1850 at St. Martin, London. It is not yet clear if the those two entries refer to the same person. He would have been a bit old, 43, when James Charles was b. in 1893.
