Margaret Jane Rooney

#11,Margaret Jane "Maggie" Rooney, was 6 Sep 1875, in Nemaha Co., KS. Born, 1 Apr 1858, in Galesburg, Knox, IL. Died, 2 Jun 1928, in Hebron, Thayer, NE. Burial: Jun 1928, in Calvary Cem., Hebron, NE.

Margaret was the daughter of Patrick "Pat" Rooney and Roseanna Livings (or Levings), Irish immigrants from County Down in northern Ireland during the 1850's.

At the time of her 1875 marriage to Joseph, her Marriage Certificate states that she was seventeen years of age, younger than Joseph's half-sisters, Emma and Molly, who were living with Joseph on 160 acres in Nemaha County.

In addition to taking care of Joseph's two young children of Joseph's deceased first wife, Henry and David Lunham, as well as Sarah and Clara, Margaret and Joseph promptly started another family of their own. Emma soon left their home about the time of the birth of Margaret's first child to marry a local man, Ruben Brown. Margaret apparently came from a non-demonstrative family, and she did not enjoy the "clumsy hugs and sloppy kisses" of young Henry and David, nor the fact that they called her "maw." They later were sent to live with relatives in Ohio.

Her step-daughter, Sarah Elizabeth ("Lizzie"), married Mark Rooney, her father's half-brother, Mark, who was 28 years younger than Margaret's father. In her later years, Margaret suffered from severe arthritis and used crutches. Her knees were terribly swollen and painful. She was 70 when she died. Children:
