Ihmt (Emma) Frerichs

#27, Ihmt (Emma) Frerichs is the daughter of Frerk (Frerich?) Henrichs and Tadje Tjaden.

Born 20 May 1811 at Hanover, Ostfriesland. Died 25 May 1897 at Hastings, Adams, NE.

Emma was born at Moorhausen in Ostfriesland along the north coast of Germany. Her obituary spells her maiden name as "Frarys." She married her husband when she was twenty-two. According to information received, the marriage occurred at Engerhafe, a few miles West of Moorhusen. Since one would expect that the traditional practice was followed of the wife's parents hosting the ceremony, it may be that Emma's family had moved from Moorhusen to Engerhafe. We know that her children were thereafter born at Moorhusen which suggests that her husband lived in Moorhusen at the time of the marriage.

Emma's mother, Tadje, died in 1845 when Emma was 34. Her father, Frerk, died 3 years later in 1845. In 1857 when she was forty-six, Emma and her husband and family immigrated to America, settling in Woodford Co., IL where they lived for 22 years. About 1874, at the age of sixty-three, Emma and her husband moved to Nebraska. After her husband died, in 1896 she moved into the home of Henry Conrad in Hastings, NE.

Her obituary reports that until twelve weeks prior to her death, she was in good health and of strong mind and constitution. er obituary reports that during her list "sickness, though at times suffering terribly, she has been comforted by her trust in her Savior, who, for many years has been her comforter and constant guide. Feeling thus, she could not fear Death, but was eager to meet him as the only one between herself and eternal rest." She passed away on a Tuesday afternoon at the home of her son, Henry at the age of 86 years and 5 days. Funeral services were held the following Thursday at the home of her son, Henry. Rev. Doescher of Hastings preached the sermon.

Her marker in the Conrad plot had been quite simple. There was no name, no date or place of birth, no date or place of death: it contains only the single word, "Grandma." In the Fall of 1992, a number of her descendants, led by Lucille Fitzke, contributed to a fund to add additional information to her headstone. Now, beneath the existing GRANDMA, appears the following: EMMA CONRAD, WIFE OF DIRK, 1811-1897.

She married Richard "Dirk" Conrads on 13 May 1833..
