Update of 24 Apr 2004: The 1860 Franklin Census identifies William H. Prentice as the son of Gilbert and Candace Prentice. Gilbert is 8.1a(i) in our eBook and is a descendant of the immigrant, Thomas Prentice.
William H. Prentice, b. Jul 1852, MA, appears in the 1880 Orange, Franklin Co., MA census and also in the 1900 Franklin Co., MA census, with his wife, Louise R. Huntoon, c. 1854, MA. The also appear in Ancestry.com . Children per census and Ancestry.com:
- Halsey Russell Prentice, b. c. 1871, MA and d. 1934. He does not appear in the 1920 or 1930 census.
- Oliver J. Prentiss b: 1872 and d. 1873.
- Marcia Prentiss b: 1874 and d. 1875.
- Lovina Prentiss b: 1876 and d. 1878.
- Marion Estelle Prentice, b. 18 May 1877, MA and d. 1877. (female)
- Bessie W. Prentiss b: 1879 and d. 1881.
- Clara Louisa Prentice, b. 6 Jul 1879, MA and d. 17 My 1882..
- Roxie/Roxy Prentice, 2 Jul 1881, MA. She m. Mr. Whittcome, but was living at home without her husband in the 1900 census.
- Bessie Ruth Prentiss b: 11 Nov 1884 and d. 17 Apr 1885.
- Abraham Sylvanus Prentiss b: 18 Aug 1885. . . . . . . . . [2]
- Bessie Julia Prentiss b: 5 Oct 1886 and d. 9 Jan 1948.
- Sarah Margaret Prentiss b: 5 May 1889 and d. 29 Nov 1918.
- Angie Ida Prentiss b: 1 Apr 1891 and d. 6 Feb 2003.
Also shown in the family is Willie Eddie Huntoon, b. 30 Nov 1868 in Orange, Franklin, MA and d. 12 Dec 1870. Louise was apparently only about 17 at the time of the birth of Halsey Russell Prentice in 1871, so little Willie Eddie Huntoon may have been (1) born out of wedlock, or (2) a child of a prior marriage, or (3) a cousin of Louise who was living with the family. Although the first alternative appears the more likely, further investigation is needed.
Also shown in William's home in the 1900 census are the following persons whose relationships to William are given as follows:
- Phillip Prentice, GS, b. May 1898, MA. He is likely a son of Roxie since his name is listed immediately after her name. Not in 1930 census.
2. Abraham Sylvanus Prentiss, b: 18 Aug 1885. He appears inthe 1920 Orange, Franklin Co., MA census and in the 1930 Acton, Middlesex Co., MA census, with his wife, One possible clue lies in the location: Orange, Franklin Co., MA. A review of the IGI and Binney's 1883 PRENTICE books shows a Gilbert L. Prentiss, b. c. 1825, Housepainter, and his wife, Candace, b. c. 1833. Gilbert does not appear in the 1880 census (although he does appear in the 1885 Orange town directory), but his wife, Candace, does appear in Orange in the family home of James S. and Rosalthe Howard whose ages are such that one of them may be a sibling to Candace. In addition, Candace, b. c. 1833, might be a mother to William who was b. Jul 1852.
Also appearing in the 1880 and 1900 census in Orange were Francis A. Prentiss, b. Jan 1855, MA, Housepainter and his wife, Alice A., b. Apr 1857, MA and children:
Francis might be a son of Candace and brother to William. And Francis may, or may not, be the same person as Francis Francis N. Prentiss shown inthe IGI as b. c. 1857 in Danvers, Essex Co., MA, son of Joseph Gallison Prentiss and Anna B..
