Virgil B. Prentice of Willet, Cortland Co., NY
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2000 and Revised 24 Jan 2016

Update of 4 Nov 2006: For Virgil B. Prentice's roots, see now our Valentine-3 eBook.

In our Fall 1998 Prentice Newsletter we featured an article about Ozias G. Prentice and George Washington Prentice. We now have new information from Deborah Nye Corgan and Rose Kulin which resolves some of the questions raised in that article and we can now construct the following family tree:

A. Ozias G. Prentice, b. c. 1787, CT. He died on 2 Jan 1855 and is interred in the E. Afton Cemetery, Afton, Chenango Co., NY. In reviewing the 1840 and 1850 NY census, we find Ozias G. Prentice in 1840 in Cincinnati, Cortland Co., NY and in 1850 in Sandford, Broome Co., NY.

Ozias m. Laura Griswold on 11 Jul 1808 (Ref: Deborah Corgan, email, 25 May 2000). Laura was b. c. 1791, MA. Children:

  1. (son) Prentice, b. before 1810. . . . . . . [1]
  2. Samuel G. Prentice, b. c. 1820, NY. Living with his brother, Ransom, and sister, Emeline in the 1880 Sanford, Broome Co., NY census.
  3. Roxana L. Prentice, b. c. 1822, NY. She died 10 Jun 1862 and is interred in the E. Afton Cemetery.
  4. Ransom L. Prentice, b. c. 1829, NY.
  5. Lawry L. Prentice, b. c. 1832, NY.
  6. Emeline Prentice .

Although only speculation at this point, the unnamed son born before 1810 is likely Virgil B. Prentice, b. c. 1809 in NY, who appears in the 1850 Willet, Cortland Co., NY census since Virgil gave one of his sons the fairly unusual name of "Ozias". By combining that census information with information from Deborah Nye Corgan and Rose Kulin, we can construct the family of Virgil and his descendants.

1. Virgil Barzilla Prentice, b. 9 Aug 1809, NY, and d. 15 Apr 1889 in Dale, WI. Bur. Pine Grove Cem., Dale Outagamie Co., WI. Farmer. He m. Angeline Webb, b. c. 1812, NY. In 1860 census in Dale, Outagamie Co., WI. Children:

  4. Mercy A. Prentice, b. c. 1844, NY. Called "Mary A. Prentice" in 1860 Dale census and living at home.
  5. Ozias Prentice. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [3]

2. George Washington Prentice, b. 10 Feb 1839, Smithville, NY (per Rose Kulin). He d. 1916. George appears in the 1880 and 1900 Dale, Outagamie Co., WI census with his wife and family.

He m. Lydia Francis "Frankie" (Paddleford) Prentice, b. 7 Jan 1843, Greene, NY (per Rose Kulin). By a posting on the Prentice list dated 25 jan 2001, Deborah Nye Corgan added the following additional information:

My Lydia Frances Paddleford was known as Frankie and maybe "Frank".... Among my fathers papers is a paper about the Elliott and Cornish families, founders of Stonington, CT. Frankie's mother, unnamed, is among the descendants of those families:
    1. Adin Elliott's daughter, Desire Elliott (born 1791, died July 4, 1823) married Jabez Cornish (born 1786, died April 1870).
    2. Daughter, Roxanna Amanda Cornish (b. 1808, died young but married William Matheson or Matison in 1828 and moved to Ohio. (the genealogist credited this info to page 48 of" The History and Genealogy of the Cornish Families in America", by Joseph E. Cornish of Boston, Mass. 1907. He also notes that Desire was 17 when Roxana was born and went on to have 10 children in all.) ;

Footnote 1: An email of 18 Feb 2003 from Gayle at Zwishko@aol.com reads, in part, as follows:

"I asked my great-aunt Lucille about information about Ella Maurine (Prentice) Plashko [who] knew Ella well. As far as she remembers Ella had a brother, Francis who was married to Margie. Francis was a plumber. Ella also had a brother (unnamed) who drowned in a lake in Hortonville, WI or near there. Ella had a sister named Alice who also died very young of what Lucille thought was spinal meningitis. She had another sister, Irene (married name Burmingham?) who had 3-4 children. She believes one of the children was Alice....When I see them I will confirm that the info I wrote down is correct. Gayle"
