Thomas Prentice of Lesmahagow, Scotland

Thomas Prentice of Lesmahagow, Scotland
Fall 1999 and Revised 20 Jan 2000

Update of 13 May 2000: Thomas is a descendant of Thomas Prentice of Lanark, Scotland, discussed in our Winter 1999 Article.

We are helping Rachelle Gilbert and Jacqueline R. Gibson trace the ancestry of Thomas Prentice and of Lesmahagow, Scotland and his wife, Agness McColl (McCall, McCroll, etc). They were m. 31 May 1832 in Avondale. Agnes was living with her son, Daniel, in the 1881 census. Known children (per IGI, Rachelle and Jacqueline):

  • Dorothea Prentice, b. 24 Jul 1833, Greenhills, Lesmahagow. She m. James (surname?) on 15 Dec 1863 at Lanark.
  • Daniel Prentice, b. 22 Dec 1835, Burnside, Lesmahagow. In 1881 census.
  • Marion Stevenson Prentice, b. 27 May 1838, Darnfillian Burn, Lesmahagow.
  • Janet Prentice, b. 3 Feb 1841, Danfillian Burn, Lesmahagow.
  • John Prentice, b. 3 Oct 1842, Lesmahabow.
  • Hugh Prentice, b. 18 Oct 1843, Westmains, Carnwath. Hugh died 3 Jul 1850 and is bur. in the Carnwath cemetery.
  • Agnes Prentice, b. 25 Jul 1847, Carnwath.

Who Are Thomas Prentice's Parents?

There was more than one Thomas Prentice of Lesmahagow who might be Dorothea's father. However, based on the name of his daughter, Marion Stevenson Prentice, an educated guess would be that he is the son of Daniel Prentice and Marion Stevenson of Lesmahagow. The were married 7 Jun 1804 in Lesmahagow. Jacqueline Gibson reaches the same conclusion. A MI in Carnwath cemetery calls Daniel a farmer, indicates a birth date c. 1778 and d. 16 Mar 1843 at the age of 65.

Marion is the daughter of Thomas Stevenson and Isobel/Isabella Frood/Fruid. Marion died in Hawksland, Lesmahagow on 24 Mar 1856 and is buried in the Carnwath churchyard.

Daniel and Marion had the following children:

  • Isabella Prentice, b. 19 Mar 1805, Lesmahagow.
  • Thomas Prentice, b. 11 Feb 1808, Lesmahagow. Thomas is bur. in the Carnwath cemetery and d. 7 Aug 1849.
  • Elizabeth Prentice, b. 26 Mar 1810, Lesmahagow.
  • Mary Prentice, b. 29 Aug 1813, Lesmahagow.
  • Marion Prentice, b. 16 Mar 1818, Lesmahagow.
  • John Prentice, b. 1820, Lesmahagow.
  • Janet Prentice, b. 1824, Lesmahagow.
  • Margaret, b. 1826, Lesmahagow.
A search of PrenticeNet's Scotland christening records discloses only 1 Daniel Prentice who might be the Daniel who married Marion Stevenson; he is Daniel Stevenson, b. 25 Feb 1790 in Carluke, son of James Prentice and Isobel Baillie. However, he would have only 14 at the time of Daniel's 1804 marriage.

Another possible set of parents for Daniel is reported by Jacqueline Gibson. She says that another researcher claims to have identified Daniel as the son of John Prentice and Elizabeth Stuart who m. in Lesmahagow in 1777. That would be consistent with Daniel's birth c. 1778 but has yet to be confirmed.
