We are helping William McCallum in tracing his Prentice ancestry, as set out below:

1. John Prentice was b. c. 1790-1811. He might be the John Prentice shown in the IGI as b. 1811, and called a relative of Thomas Burnside. John was a quarryman in the mines around Dalmellington, Ayrshire, Scotland. He and his family are thought to have lived at 3 Waterside Village (near Dalmellington) at the time of the 1851 census.

John m. Janet although we have not located their marriage record. By email of 6 Jan 2001, William McCallum advises that he believes it likely that Janet's maiden name is Janet Reid. He found the parents of Alexander Napier born 1828 to Peter Napier and Janet Reid in Barony, Lanarkshire. Since this Alexander is listed in the 1851 census as the stepson of John Prentice and Janet, he infers that John Prentice's wife's maiden name was Reid.

The children of John Prentice and Janet included:

1. (perhaps) Margaret Prentice. A Margaret Prentice is shown in the IGI as marrying John Hewitt on 18 Mar 1850 in Dalmellington. If she is their daughter, that would account for her not appearing in their household in the 1851 census. Son of Margaret and John (per IGI):

2. (perhaps) Adam Prentice. An Adam Prentice is shown in the IGI as marrying Catherine Murdoch on 22 Apr 1850 in Dalmellington. If he is their son, that would account for her not appearing in their household in the 1851 census. Children of Adam and Catherine (per IGI):

8. Alex Napier, perhaps a son by an earlier marriage of Janet. There is a chance he might be the Alexander Prentice who m. Janet Murdoch on 18 Apr 1856 at Mauchline, Ayr, Scotland, since Adam, above, was living in Mauchline in 1852.

2. Cecelia Prentice was born in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1831 (per 1851 census in Scotland), She emigrated to the United States in 1858 and lived, for a time, with relatives named McKissock or Kissock and lived in the Madison/Macoupin county area. She died on 7 Jul 1862 and is buried in St. John's Cemetary in Irving Township, Illinois.

Cecelia married Archibald McCallum 29 Aug 1852 in Dalmellington, Ayrshire, Scotland. He was b. 24 Oct 1829 in Dalry, Ayrshire, and d. 6 Mar 1904. Bur in Asbury Cem., Raymont, Montgomery Co., IL. She m. Robert Cuthbert on 12 Feb 1864 in Dalmellington. The IGI also shows a John Prentice b. on 24 Oct 1863 to an Elizabeth Prentice with no father shown. It is unknown if this is the same Elizabeth. They had 10 children, including (per IGI and Judith Brown Kohler's email of 16 Oct 2011):

5. Isabella Nisbet Cuthbert, b. 26 Mar 1885 and d. Nov 4 1938. She married John Brown, b. 13 Sep 1881 and d. Jul 2 1964. They had 9 children, including:
   1. Robert Brown, the oldest of 9 children. He married Elizabeth Anna Clart and they had 5 children, including:
      1. Judith Brown Kohler . In 2011 She lives near Hamburg Germany.

6. Jeanette Marcella McCallum, b. 12 Mar 1854, Scotland, and d. 11 Apr 1941, Raymond, Montgomery Co., IL. Jeanette Marcelle McCallum was Christened at a Church in Patna, in Ayrshire, Scotland - just south of Dalmellington and near a place called Waterside, Ayrshire, Scotland.

She m. Joseph S. Kessinger on1 Jan 1879, Montgomery Co., IL. He was b. c. 1855, IL.

7. Mary McCallum, b. 18 or 25 Nov 1856, Scotland.

She m. Charles Peebles on 10 Nov 1880, Montgomery Co., IL. He was b. c. 1854, IL.

8. Archibald McCallum, b. 25 Nov 1858, Paddocks Grove, Madison Co., IL.

He m. Jennie Scherer on 4 Jan 1886, Montgomery Co., IL.

On the theory that perhaps John Prentice, like Cecelia, was born in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, in 1831, we located a John Prentice, chr. 7 Jul 1811 at Cambusnethan, son of Alexander Prentice and Cicilia Haddow. John's age is right, and Cecelia may have been named after her mother.

We also found the following additional children of Alexander and Cecilia:

• Agnes Prentice, chr. 4 Sep 1808, Cambusnethan.
• Alexander Prentice, chr. 11 Jul 1813 at Cambusnethan.
• Mary Prentice, chr. 13 Aug 1815 at Cambusnethan.

Now, guessing at the parents of Alexander who married Cicilia Haddow, and using Cambusnethan as a likely birth place, Alexander may be the Alexander Prentice who was chr. 28 Nov 1784 at Cambusnethan. He was the son of John Prentice and Agnes Dalziel.

Guessing further as to the parents of John who married Agnes, again using Cambusnethan as a likely birth place, John may be the John Prentice chr. 20 Aug 1758 at Cambusnethan. He was the son of Thomas Prentice and Agnes Forrest (See Fn. 1, below).

Finally, we guessed as to the identity of Thomas who married Agnes. Our database didn't show any Thomas Prentice born in Cambusnethan in an appropriate time frame. However, Thomas Prentice might be the Thomas Prentice chr. 20 Jun 1738 at Carluke. He was the son of John Prentice (wife's name not given.)
