The Rocket's Red Glare

The Rocket's Red Glare
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2000 and Revised 6 May 2004

We found a family anecdote by Mary Jane Maulsby which we thought worth repeating.

Her great-grandfather and a good friend decided to leave Scotland as an adventure, but were undecided whether to go to America or Australia. Flipping a coin, they decided on America.

They arrive in NY harbor on the evening of the 4th of July, 1875 and the sky was ablaze with bursting rockets everywhere.

Her great-grandfather turned to his friend and said, "If we'd gone to Australia like I wanted, we wouldn't have ended up in the middle of this war."
