1. Unknown Prentice, perhaps b. c. 1820-1835.
He m. Hariet/Harriet Buck (b. c. 1837, Canada with her parents b. in NY) and d. 5 Mar 1921, South Lyon. She appears in the 1880 Lyon, Oakland Co., MI census with her son, Solomon. Unknown and Harriet had 1 or more children, including:
Solomon Prentice, b. c. 1856, Canada. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]
"Harriet Buck", identified as Solomon's mother in the 1880 census, above, is identified as Harriet Upthegrove in Solomon's Death Certificate in the possession of Mary Henderson (per her email, 28 Jun 2008). The surname, Buck, was acquired by Harriet Upthegrove when she m. 2nd William Buck on 30 Mar 1870. He was b. c. 1810, Greenfield, NY, and was a farmer. Harriet m. 3rd James Fenner who was b. c. 1832, England, farmer, and d. 5 Nov 1886, Lyon at age 54,
2. Solomon Prentice, b. c. 1856-1858, Canada, appears in the 1870 census in the home of Edmund and Mary Brach in Brighton Livingston Co., MI, as a single farm laborer. He later appears as b, c. 1858 in Canada, age 22, in the 1880 Lyon, Oakland Co., MI census in the home of his mother, Hariet/Harriet Buck (b. c. 1837, Canada with her parents b. in NY) and d. 5 Mar 1921, South Lyon. Solomon later appears in the 1910 and 1920 Oakland Co., MI census with his wife and family.
- Note: The 1852 census in Etobicoke Twp., York Co., Canada West (Ontario), says Harriet was
b. c. 1837, Canada with her father b. in the United States and her mother in Canada.
Solomon m. Cora V., b. c. 1861, MI.
We found the following information on the internet about the death place of Solomon and Cora:

- Verna/Vurnia Prentice, b. c. 1879, MI. In the census she is identified as the granddaughter of Harriet Buck. Harriet Buck may be the same person as Harriet Fenner, shown in the 1910 and 1920 census in Solomon's household and called Solomon's mother.
In 1897 Verna was living in S. Lyons, MI when she m. Reuben H. Brock on 29 Sep 1897 at Windsor, Ontario. He was a farmer, b. c. 1870 at in MI and living Millford, MI, son of William Brock and Elizaeth Holmes. Wedding witnesses were Norman H. Russell of "Mhow Cent. India" & J.A. Mustard of Harwich.
- Nellie A. Prentice, b. c. 1886, MI. She m. Mr. Homes, but was living at home, without her husband, in the 1910 Oakland Co., MI census. Also with her was her daughter:
- Blanch V. Homes, b. c. 1906, MI.
- Lula Prentice, b. c. 1894, MI.
- Lawrence Ray Prentice, b. c. 1906, MI. He was living at home in the 1920 census. Not in 1930 census.
Who are Solomon Prentice's Parents? The 1880 census shows both of Solomon's parents b. in Canada.
By internet posting of 3 Dec 2003, Mary Henderson provides the following information:
- I'm searching for info on James and Delilah Upthegrove, who are buried in the Pine Ridge/Humber
Summit cemetery in Woodbridge, Ontario.
Does anyone by chance live near this cemetery, that would be able to take a look at their headstones, please? A RAOGK volunteer looked at the microfilm for this cemetery, but didn't find James and Delilah, even though they really are buried here. They did find their son, Lafayette, though. So maybe the microfilm is misindexed or something. I'd really like to get birth and death dates for James and Delilah Upthegrove from the headstones, if possible.
James and Delilah Upthegrove were probably born in the early 1800s. I think I know of two children -
(1) Lafayette Upthegrove, b. about 1829, d. June, 12, 1852, and (2) Harriet Upthegrove, b. about 1834 d.
in Oakland Co., Michigan on March 5, 1921.
Harriet married Solomon Prentice and had one son, Solomon, Jr., b. Sept. 10, 1856 in Canada. By 1870, Harriet and Solomon were in Michigan, and Harriet had remarried - don't know if Solomon Sr. died, or they were divorced.
The 1852 census in Etobicoke Twp., York Co., Canada West (Ontario), contains the following information:
Line Name Occupation Place of Birth Religion Age Sex Born C. 36 Upthegrove, James Labourer United States Church of England 50 M 1802 37 Upthegrove, Delilah Canada Church of England 45 M 1807 38 Upthegrove, Layfayette Labourer Canada Church of England 22 M 1830 42 UPTHEGROVE HARRIET CANADA CHURCH OF ENGLAND 20 F 1832 39 Upthegrove, Jacob Labourer Canada Church of England 16 M 1836 40 Upthegrove, John James Labourer Canada Church of England 15 M 1837 43 Upthegrove, Sarah Canada Church of England 10 F 1842 41 Upthegrove, William Canada Church of England 6 M 1846
Based on census information, we can be reasonably sure that Solomon's mother was indeed named Harriet. Verna's use of the surnames, Buck and Fenner, suggests that Solomon's father may have been deceased, or divorced, by 1880 and that his mother had remarried and again been widowed.
By email of 26 Jun 2008, Mary Henderson adds:
- I don't know who Solomon Sr.s parents are. Harriet's parents, according to my info, are James Upthegrove b. NJ
and Delilah Wiant b. KY. I show Delilah' parents as being James Wiant and Rachel b. abt 1780 d. 9-10-1853. Harriet had
a brother, Lafayette Upthegrove.
Solomon Prentice may, or may not, be related to John Prentice of Pontiac, Oakland Co., MI who also appears in the 1880 Pontiac, Oakland Co., MI census and who was then age 31, b. c. 1849 in Scotland.
We note a posting in Ancestry.com showing a Solomon Prentice, b. c. 1856, Canada, son of Solomon George Prentice (b. c. 1834, Ontario, Canada) and Catherine Cumming (b. c. 1836, Ontario, Canada). He is a descendant of Oliver Prentice and Lydia DeLong. It is presently unclear whether it is the same Solomon Prentice with a different 1st or 2nd wife.
