Old Monkland lies about 8 miles east of central Glasgow and about 4 miles northwest of Motherwell. Christine Hadden explains that Old Monkland is basically today's Coatbridge . New Monkland covered part of Airdrie and the area to the north of Coatbridge. If one locates Glenmavis on a map, that is where New Monkland Parish Church is today.
Glasgow Vital Records show the following births, christenings and marriages for Old Monkland, as well as New Monkland, in the period from the late 1600s to the early 1800s:
MARRIAGES 18 Nov 1809 Margaret Prentice m. Ninian Struthers in Old Monkland. 15 May 1814 John Prentice m. Helen Buttry in Old Monkland. CHRISTENINGS 20 OCT 1693 William Prentice, s/o John Prentice and Janet Peter in New Monkland. 20 MAY 1694 John Prentice, s/o John Prentice and Janet Petrie in New Monkland. 26 SEP 1697 Alexander Prentice, s/o John Prentice and Janet Peter in New Monkland. 17 JUN 1771 Janet Prentice, d/o Robert Prentice and Jean Smilie of New Monkland. 23 FEB 1773 Marion Prentice, d/o Robert Prentice and Jean Smilie of Old Monkland. 10 NOV 1805 Robert Prentice, s/o John Prentice and Marion Thomson of Old Monkland. 21 APR 1811 Robert Prentice s/o Robert Prentice and Elizabeth Frame of Old Monkland. 17 APR 1815 Alexander Prentice, s/o Robert Prentice and Eliza Frame of Old Monkland. 13 NOV 1814 Christian Prentice, s/o John Prentice and Helen Buttery of Old Monkland. 20 OCT 1816 Mary Prentice, d/o John Prentice and Helen Buttery of Old Monkland. 29 OCT 1815 George Prentice, s/o James Prentice and Jane Euston of New Monkland.
