Mary Prentice of Kelvedon, England

Mary Prentice of Kelvedon, Essex Co., England
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 2000 and Revised 23 Jul 2000

We are helping Valerie Bushell in her efforts to identify her Prentice roots. Here is what we have so far:

1. Mary Prentice was likely born about 1710-23 at an unknown location. The IGI does not show a birth or baptismal record of any likely Mary Prentice in that time frame.

She married Phillip Boultwood (or Boltwood) on 13 Oct 1738 in Kelvedon, Essex County. Kelvedon lies about 10 miles northeast of Chelmsford on Highway A12 and about an equal distance southwest of Colchester. Children per Ancestry.com :

  1. Mary Boultwood, 1739 –
  2. Philip Boultwood, 1740 –
  3. Christopher Boultwood, 1746-1746
  4. Christopher Boultwood, 1748 – 1748
  5. Elizabeth Boltwood, 1750 –
  6. Christopher Boultwood, 1753 – 1798
  7. Thomas Boultwood, 1755 –
  8. James Boultwood. 1757 –

Is Mary's Father Named Christopher?

Valerie Bushell reports she has examined microfilm copies of the records of the church at Lavendon and that there are no Prentices mentioned in that time frame other than Mary and her marriage record. Her continuing search through microfilmed records of nearby church records so far has not yielded results.

Valerie thinks Mary's father might have been named Christopher Prentice because Mary gave that name to three of her sons, two of whom died in infancy. She says that name does not appear to be from the Boultwood side.
