1. John Prentis Sr., b. c. 1788 in England. As a Pawn Broker, John appears in the 1850 census for South Wark Ward 3 with his wife, Maria, b. c. 1797 in England. Not in 1870 or 1880 census. He is almost certainly the father of:
- John Prentis Jr., b. c. 1814 in PA. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]
2. John Prentis Jr., b. c. 1814 in PA, who appears in the same 1850 South Wark Ward 3, Philadelphia census with his wife and family.
He m. Ellen Bemis on 10 Nov 1835 per Ancestry.com . Ellen was b. c. 1816 in MA. Not in 1870 or 1880 census. Children (per 1850 census):
- Anna M. Prentis, b. 30 May 1840, PA. She m. Joseph Wilkins on 8 May 1862.
- John Prentis, b. 22 Jul 1842.
- Joseph Prentis, b. 25 Jul 1844 and d. 3 mos. later on 25 Oct 1844.
- Ellen Prentis, b. 18 Oct 1845, PA.
- Caroline Prentis, b. c. 1848, PA.
- Franklin Bemis Prentiss, b. 14 Jan 1852 per Ancestry.com . He m. Anna M. Piper on 3 Apr 1895. An Ancestor Chart for him can be found at Ancestry.com . He might be the "Frank B. Prentes" shown in the 1910 Philadelphia, Warren Co., PA, census as b.c. 1855 in PA with his wife, Anna M. No children shown. Not in 1920 census.
Neither John or his son appear in the 1860 and later PA census records, so it seems likely they may have headed west in the California Gold Rush of the early 1850s.
