1. Jannett Prentiss was b. c. 1762 and d. 24 Aug 1847 at the age of 85. (per emails of 1 and 2 Aug 2000 from Glenn Marshall containing headstone information). The cemetery where Jannet is buried is in Montgomery, Orange Co., NY
Jannett's obituary in the Newburgh Gazette of 1 Sep 1847 relates that he/she died the preceding Tuesday, age 86. That would indicate a 1761 birth date, a year earlier..
One's first reaction, in seeing the name, Jannett, is to think that it is a spelling variation of the female name, Janet. However, that may not be the case. In that time frame, it was not unusual to use the name of a mother, or other ancestor, as a first name; Jannett could be a male name derived from a surname.
A review of census information shows a Jennet Prentiss in the 1810 New York, NY census. There is also a Jenuet Prentiss (sic) (a look at the microfilm shows it to be Jennet Prentice), female, age 50-60, in the 1840 Newburgh, Orange Co., NY census with no husband or children shown. Newburgh lies on the Hudson River, a few miles north of New York City.
A check of the IGI proved fruitless.
