Who are James Prentice's Parents?

If Margaret Prentice was b. in 1785, her father was probably born between 1750 and 1765.

It is just a guess at this point, but a review of Glasgow Records Office records shows only one James Prentice born in the right time frame. He is James Prentice, b. 25 1750 in Lanark, son of Thomas Prentice who m. Jean Davie on 7 Sep 1746 at Lanark.

We have to go even further afield in trying to identify James' paternal grandfather who was likely born between 1710 and 1730. If Thomas is James' father, then there are four possibilities as to the identity of Thomas:

  1. Thomas Prentice, b. 1710 at Carluke, son of John Prentice. For an article about John Prentice of Carluke, see our Winter 1998 issue.
  2. Thomas Prentice, b. 1722 at Carluke, son of Archibald Prentice. For an article about Archibald Prentice, see our Winter 1998 issue.
  3. Thomas Prentice, b. 1724 at Carluke, son of John Prentice.
  4. Thomas Prentice, b. 1726 at Carluke, son of Alexander Prentice.
