He m Lydia McMillan of Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland on 25 Jun 1808 at Lesmahagow, Lanarkshie, Scotland. She was chr. 11 Jun 1779 at Lesmahagow and was the dau. of Thomas McMilland and Mary Tweadle (however, the 1841 census says Lydia was b. c. 1791, Lanarkshire). Children:

1. James Prentice Jr. who was b. 4 Jul 1820 at Sunnyside Lodge, Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He immigrated to Canada in 1859. Died 11 Jan 1906 in Lanark, Ontario, Canada and is bur. in the Lanark Village Cemetery. He was a gardener and belonged to the Church of Scotland.

James Jr. married Mary Ann Fraser on 19 Nov 1843, in Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland. She was b. 1818 in Edinburgh, dau. of Dr. William Fraser. Mary Ann d. 10 Feb 1885 in Lanark, Ontario. Children:

Who are James Prentice's Parents?

Who are the parents of the James Prentice who married Lydia McMillan? Since James married Lydia in 1808, James was likely born about 1780 to 1790 in Lanark, although he married in Lesmahagow, perhaps because that was Lydia's residence. Lesmahagow lies only a short distance southwest of Lanark. A review of the birth and christening records of the Glasgow Records Office suggests 5 possibilities:

James Prentice, chr. 5 or 23 Nov 1782, son of John Prentice and Betty Tod of Lanark. However, he may have died because John and Betty had a later son also named James (see below).
James Prentice, chr. 19 Apr 1789, son of Robert Prentice and Janet Liddle of Lanark.
James Prentice, chr. 27 Dec 1789, son of James Prentice and Janet Lockhart of Carluke which lies a short distance north of Lanark.
James Prentice, chr. 14 Mar 1790, son of John Prentice and Betty Tod of Lanark (see above).
James Prentice, b. 2 Apr 1780, son of James Prentice and Margaret Meikle of Carnwath which lies several miles northeast of Lanark.
