One tends to think of the Prentice, Prentis and Prentiss surnames as primarily English, with a scattering of Scotch and Irish folks also.
However, in reviewing census records, we have found several who seem to have German roots. The latest find is Hans Prentis who appears in the 1880 NY census as a Cabinet Maker. He was born c. 1835 in Hanover, Germany, as was his wife, Jacobine, b. c. 1837 Hanover They have a son:
- George Prentis, b. c. 1862 in Hanover. He does not appear in the 1920 census.
- Lora Prentis, b. c. 1865, Hanover.
- John Prentis, b. c. 1867, Hanover. Not in 1920 census.
- Jacobine Prentis, b. c. 1871, NJ.
- William Prentis, b. c. 1876, NJ. Not in 1920 census.
- Anne Prentis, b. c. 1878,NJ.
About 1863-65 they immigrated to New Jersey, and then by 1867 to New York City, NY.
