Using the records available from Records Office in Glascow, Scotland, and information from Carol Novak, we have compiled the following tentative family tree for James Prentice of Carstairs, Scotland.
1. William Prentice of Carstairs, b. c. 1644-54.
He married Catherine Henchlewood on 31 Dec 1675 at Carstairs. Their children include:
- Margret Prentice, chr. 29 Oct 1673, Carstairs. She may be a daughter by a prior marriage.
- Agnes Pentice, chr. 4 Feb 1675, Carstairs.
- (unknown) Prentice, chr. 11 Jan 1677, Carstairs.
- James Prentice, chr. 16 Jan 1679, Carstairs.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]
2. James Prentice, chr. 16 Jan 1679.
He may be the James Prentice who married Isabell Forrest 23 Jan 1717 at Carstairs. Their children included:

4. William Prentice, chr. 1 Dec 1745, Carstairs.
There is some question whether he is a son of William Prentice and Catherine Wallace who we show as marrying on 18 Aug 1745, Carluke. His Dec. birth is only a little more ythan 3 months after the Aug. marriage date. Also, his chr. does not appear in our copy of records for that period from the Glasgow Records Office. Also, Sheila Mann's email of 27 May 2009 advises that the records she obtained from the GRO do not show any William Prentice chr. that date. There is, however, a James Prentice chr. to William and Catherine on that same date who apparently died as an infant since there is a later son born named James Prentice.
He m. Katherine Watson. The only child shown in Glasgow christening records is:
- William Prentice, chr. 27 Apr 1766, Carstairs. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [5]
