Solomon Prentice of MA and NC

Solomon Prentice Jr. was born 15 Aug 1748, Easton, MA, son of Rev. Solomon Prentice and his wife, Sarah.

He married, 1st in 1770 Anna Holbrook of Bellingham, MA; from there he went to Hull, MA where his father was preaching, and where Solomon Jr. was constable; and in 1775 he returned with his parents to Grafton, MA and next Alstead NH where his wife d. in March, 1778.

He closed up his affairs there and moved to Edenton, NC where he again married and died there in 1805.

Children by his first wife, according to Binney's 1883 book:

• Anna Prentice, b. in Hull, 11 Oct 1771; probably d. young; her birth is recorded on Grafton records.
• Solomon Prentice, b. in Grafton 19 Aug 1773. He m. Elizabeth Fay of Alstead, NH on 23 May 1797; she d. 8 May 1847. Resided in Skeneatales, Co., NY where he died.
• Sarah Prentice, b. 3 Jan 1775; m. John Crane in 1791, farmer of Glover, VT; they had eight children, most of whom lived in Sutton, MA.
• Asa Prentice, b. 19 Dec 1777; learned the hatter's trade in Providence, RI; went to Havana and d. there of yellow fever, 1804.
• Anna Prentice, b. 16 Feb 1783; m. Noah Starr Sep 1806; lived in Greenfield, OH, had 4 sons and 5 daughters. (Note: Binney's 1883 work said Anna Holbrook died in 1779, so Anna cannot be her daughter, or else her mother's death date is wrong.)

We have no information as to the identity of Solomon's second wife, nor whether he had any additional children born in NC. However, since was only in his 30s when he moved to NC, it seems likely that he would have had additional children born in NC.

In checking the Census Records, we find a John Prentice in the 1850 Adair Co., TN census who was born in NC c. 1800. John's age is such that he could be a son of Solomon's second marriage. He married Dicy, b. c. 1840, KY. Children:

• William Prentice, b. c. 1828, KY
• John A. Prentice (probably), b. c. 1831, Adair Co., KY (1860 Adair Co. census)
• Anderson Prentice, b. c. 1831, KY
• Mildred Prentice, b. c. 1833, KY
• Berry Prentice, b. c. 1838, KY
• Joel Prentice, b. c. 1840, KY
• H. C. (or H. T.) Prentice, b. c. 1843, KY
• J ames Prentice, b. c. 1845, KY
• Julia A. Prentice, b. c. 1847, KY
