Introduction: We are seeking descendant information about Simeon Prentice who appears in our John-3 eBook.
1. Simeon Prentice, son of Nathaniel Prentice of Preston, CT was born, 10 Feb 1750/1, in Preston, CT. He appears in the 1810 census in Oxford, Chenango Co., NY.
The following information comes from the affidavit of a sister-in-law, Sophia Wentworth found in Simeon's brother William's pension file:
- "Simeon Prentice was an officer in the army (during the Revolution) and was in service or went into service from Shaftsbury in Vermont, and Billings Starkweather, a brother of (Sophia) served under the said Simeon Prentice."
The pension file of Billings Starkweather identifies Simeon as a Lieutenant. He entered the service 15 Jul 1777 and was discharged 6 Dec, 1777. He was a Private under Capt. Ebenezer Allen Company in Col. Samuel Herricks Regiment of Rangers, State of Vermont; that he again entered the service July/Oct 12, 1780 and was discharged 6 Nov, 1780. He was a Sergt. under Capt. Williams Dyres Company. He again entered the service in 1781 and was discharged on 30 June 1781, a Lt. under John Starks Company in Col. Samuel Fletcher's Regiment of Rangers, State of Vermont.
Simeon may have lived in Sunderland, Bennington Co., VT about 10 miles north of Shaftsbury, in 1787, but he did not appear there in later census listings.
The 1810 Oxford, Chenango Co., NY census shows a Simeon Prentice born before 1765 who is probably the same person. He has a son age 10-16, two sons age 16-26, and a daughter, 10-16. The 1840 census shows a Simeon Prentice living at Ossian, Allegany Co., NY; Simeon did have close kin living at nearby Eagle, Wyoming Co., NY, but he would have been 89 in 1840.
He m. Unknown. The identities of his children are not yet conformed, but they may include:
