New Jersey Prentices in 1850 and Later Census
The 1850 and later New Jersey Census contains the following individuals who we have not yet been able to identify. For convenience, spellings of the PRENTICE, PRENTIS andPRENTISS surnames have been consolidated into a single surname spelling. Comments references, such as 278/58, are to the page and number of individuals in our new PRENTICE book. All were born in NJ unless otherwise indicated.

Margaret is living with sons: John (b. 1822), Peter (b. 1824) & James (b. 1829). 1860 census: Margaret, Peter and James all living together. John is married to Catherine A. in the 1860 census and living in Lodi, Bergen, NH. 1870 census: James is married to Elizabeth and living at Aquack., Passaid, NY and has 7 children. 1880 census: John married Delia (b. c. 1832, NY); living in Lodi, Bergen, NY with their daughter, Mary, b. c. 1856, NJ. Peter, James, and their sister, Kathryn Kingland (see Fn. 3) are all living together in Lodi, Bergen, NJ. 1900 census: Peter was living with his brother, James in Rutheford, Bergen, NJ. John may be the John Prentice shown living in Wallington, Bergen, NJ with wife, Catherine (b. May 1832, NY), granddaughter, Stella Schmidt (b. Dec 1885, NJ) and grandson, Henry L. Schmidt (b. Nov 1887, NJ). Fn. 2. Born NY. Living with mother, Abigail (b. 1882, MA) and sister, Mary (b. 1821, ME) Fn. 3. Probably the dau. of William of Aquck. who had dau., Catherine A., b. c. 1838. In the 1880 census she had apparently remarried and was then either widowed or divorced and living with her brothers, Peter and James (see Fn. 1). Fn. 4. Born Delaware. Perhaps widow. Living with sons Geo. W. (b. c. 1858, NY) and Franklin (b. c. 1859, NY). Fn. 5. Living with Margaret, Peter and James (see Fn. 1) Fn. 6. Born PA, probably the son of a John shown in the 1850 PA census as born in England. Fn. 7 Ann, probably widowed, appears in the 1880 Acquack. census with her daughter, Catherine, and Catherine's husband, George Gillim and their daughter, Lizzie Giillam, b. c. 1872, NJ. His son, John, b. c. 1846, is almost certainly the John Prentiss appearing in the 1880 Howard, Elk, KS census with his family. Fn. 8 Arthur Prentice was born in NY, but both his parents were born in Ireland. Has son, Artur L. Prentice, b. c. 1876, NY. Fn. 9 Henry Printice was born in NJ and has daughter, Maud, b. c. 1878, NJ. Fn. 10 Alex Prentice was born in Canada (1900 census says England) and has son, Edward, b. c. 1878, NJ. His wife, Annie (Anna in the 1900 census) was born c. 1853 in NJ.) Anna, widowed, appears in the 1900 Plainfield, Somerset, NJ census with additional sons: Alexander (b. Aug 1886, NJ), Mamie (b, Jun 1889, NJ) and Charles (b. Dec 1891, NJ). Fn. 11 Norman Printes, farmer, was b. in VT, as was both his parents, and and is living in Franklin, Gooucester, NJ with children: William (b. c. 1868, VT), Albert (b. c. 1869, VT), Mary E. (b. c. 1873, VT) and Mattie E. (b. c. 1876, NJ). He is quite probably the Norman G. Prentis in the 1900 Landis, Cumberland, NJ census who is shown born Sep 1834, VT, b. Sep 1834 with his wife, Cornelia (b. Dec 1844) and children: Mattie (b. Dec. 1876, NJ) and Rufus (b. Sep 1880, NJ). Rufus appears in the 1920 census; see Fn. 20, below. Fn. 12 Henry Hrentice's 1870 census entry shows an age of 35 (b. c. 1835) and that his occupation is a house painter. He is probably the Henry Prentice who appears in the 1880 Passaic, Passic, NJ census, painter, b. Jan 1840, NJ and married c. 1874 to Helen Van Winkle and living with her children by a prior marriage and their step-grandchildren. Fn. 13 William Prentiss is probably the person shown in the 1900 Acquackamonk, Passaic, NJ census with his wife, Martha, b. Jan 1833. Fn. 14 Henry Prentiss might be son of Ephraim Prentiss, EDB 6573. Fn. 15 Margaret Prentice m. Charles Feedler and they are living with her parents. Fn. 16 Joshua Prentiss' father, Samuel H. Prentiss, is living with them. Samuel was b. Jul 1828, MA, as was both his parents, and was a widower Fn. 17 Cornelia Prentice m. Mr. Lamb. Fn. 18 John is the son of William and Martha in the 1870 sensus. Also living with them is his uncle, Henry Prentice, the House Painter in earlier census. See also the Spring 1999 Article on Hendrick Prentiss. Fn. 19 Henry M. Prentiss is the son of R. S. Prenmtiss in the 1900 Queens, NY census. R. S. Prentiss was b. Nov. 1844, CT and his wife is Ella, b. May 1866, NY Fn. 20 Rufus M. Prentiss is the son of Norman Prentiss. See Fn. 11, Above.
