James Prentice and Anna Kibbe of Somers, CT
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 1998 and Revised 12 Dec 2008

Update of 12 Dec 2008: James Prentice can be found as a descendant of Thomas Prentice in his eBook. That eBook material now replaces this article.

The Barbour Index shows James Prentice as b. 17 May 1738 in Enfield, CT. The Barbour Index also shows a James Prentice of Somers, CT marrying Anna Kibbe of Somers, CT on 16 Feb 1760.

Although we do not yet have positive documentary confirmation, it seems likely those two men named "James" are the same person for the following reasons:

  • The Enfield James would have been 22 in 1760, just the right age to marry.

  • The Barbour index does not have any other James Prentice marrying anyone else in that time frame.

  • Somers lies only about 6 miles east of Enfield, an easy courting commute.

  • In that time frame, people usually married people who lived nearby, and it seems more reasonable to think Anna Kibbe would marry the Enfield James rather than the James Prentice of Marlborough, MA who lived about 150 miles away and whose family has no known connection with any location in CT.
