Iowa Prentices in the 1850 and Later Census
The 1850 and later Iowa Census contains the following individuals who we have not yet been able to identify. For convenience, spellings of the PRENTICE, PRENTIS and PRENTISS surnames have been consolidated into a single surname spelling. Comments references, such as 278/58, are to the page and number of individuals in our new PRENTICE book. All were born in IA unless otherwise indicated.

Fn. 6 His wife was born in Iowa and they have children William L., Eodina and Cornelius, all born in IA after 1874 Fn. 7 Menden appears in the 1850 Warrensville, Cuyahoga, OH census and is the son of Luther R. Prentis and Abigail. Both parents were born in NH but their roots have not yet been identified. Menden has children, Mabel and Clarence, both born IA. He appears in the 1900 census with a different wife, Emma (b. Nov 1844, OH) and his daughter, Mabel A. Fn. 8 Has children, Florence and Edgar, both born IA. He also appears in the 1900 Bremer Co. census. Fn. 9 Probably divorced or widowed. Has son, Charles, b. c. 1874 in "Dekota." Probably sister or daughter of Elizabeth, Fn. 10. Fn. 10 Probably widow. Has children: John (b. c. 1857, IA) and Mary (b. c. 1853, IA). Also appears in 1900 Earlville, Delaware, IA census. Fn. 11 Has children, Marion C. and Edward C., both born WI. Fn. 12 Has children, Minnie (b. c. 1870, WI) and Myrtie (b. c. 1873, IA). May be kin to Matha E. Prentice in 1900 census. Fn. 13 Has children, Albert, Homer A. and Mary J., all born IA. Fn. 14 Has daughter, Nettie, G., b. c. 1871, IA. May be Kin to Frank W., See Fn. 15. Fn. 15 Frank also appears in the 1880 Delta census. Has childen, Eva (b. c. 1873, IA), May (b. c. 1876, IA), Earnest C. (b. 1885, IA) and Arthur H. (b. 1889, IA). Probably be kin to N. A., above, Fn. 14. Frank W. might be the son of William Prentice of Becket, MA, shown on pg. 473, and a desc. of Joseph Prentice of Preston, CT who had kin living in Becket. Fn. 16 Has children Guy W. (b. c. 1874, IL), Mabel P. (b. c. 1876, IL), Mainard W. (b. c. 1877, IL) and Roy (b. c. 1879, IA. Fn. 17 Pitt is the son of Frederick R. Prentiss in the 1850 IL census. Pitt has daughters, Fanny and Edith, born in IA. Both girls appear in the 1900 Des Moines, Polk, IA census living with Sarah E. Prentice (b. 1849, IN) who is probably either a step-mother or aunt. Fn. 18 Has children Margaret (b. c. 1852, Scot.), Agnes (b. c. 1854, Scot.), Mary (b. c. 1856, IA) and Adam (b. c. 1859, IA). May also have son Curtis (see Fn. 19). Appears in 1900 Pottowatomie census, and living with him is a grandson, Isaac, b. c. 1889 in CA. Adam appears in the 1920 Otero Co., CO census with his wife, Ida M., and children: Mary and Robert A. Prentice. Fn. 19 Probably not a son of Alexander (above, see Fn. 18) since his dau., Agnes, was b. c. 1854 in Scotland and he was born c. 1851. Has children Zelda and Hugh, both born IA. Fn. 20 Has daughters Lillie J., Agnes, Alice and Ella, all born in IA. Homer appears in the 1900 census in Malden, Bureau, IL. Fn. 21 He also appears in the 1920 Lincoln Co., WA census. Fn. 22 Alma Prentice is probably a widow. Has children, also listed seperately. Fn. 23 Has children, Millie (b. 1881, NE), Minnie(?) (b. 1885, NE) and Myrtle L. (b. 1895, NE). Fn. 24 Has son, J. Leroy (b. 1890, IA). Fn. 25 May be kin to William in Dunlap in the 1900 census Fn. 26 Living with Charles M. Nash and called mother-in-law. Fn. 27 Has children, all born IA: Cora V. (b. 1890), Ashinan Z. (b. 1893), Laura M. (b. 1896) and Hazel E. (b. 1898). Fn. 28 May be son of Rhoda in 1900 Des Moines census. Fn. 29 Lucy A. is living with her daughter, Mary. Fn. 30 Has children, all born in Iowa: Arthur M., Robert A., Ruth N., Mary F., and James A. He is probably a brother of Adam Prentice who in 1900 was living in Pottowotomie County and who is a son Alexander Prentice, b. c. 1827 in Scotland who appears in the 1860 census (See Fn. 18) Fn. 31 Has son, Harold E. (b. 1897, IA). Charles also appears as Charles E. Prentice in the 1920 Spink Island, Union Co., SD census with an additional son, Walter C. (b. 1907, IA). Fn. 32 May be erroneous birth date; if should be 1826 instead of 1816, then Royal would be 195/49v, son of Stanton Prentice.
