North and South Dakota Prentices in the 1850 and Later Census Records

NORTH AND SOUTH DAKOTA PRENTICES IN 1850 AND LATER CENSUS RECORDS
We are attempting to identify a number of folks named PRENTICE, PRENTIS and PRENTISS who appear in the 1850, and later, North Dakota and South Dakota census records.

Since both were originally known simply as Dakota Territory, both areas are grouped into this single article with locations designated ND, SD or simply DAK depending on how the area is designated in the census record.

Below is a table showing those persons who we have yet to identify. For convenience the single spelling, PRENTICE, is used.

Where there are entries in the far right column, we have identified their roots. If there is no entry there, we need your help in identifying their their roots. And, whether or not we have identified their roots, we need your help in identifying their descendants.

Prentiss, age 2, shown in the 1850 Oregon, Dane, WI census, son of John B. Prentiss and his wife, Catherine. See the Fall 1998 Prentice Newsletter article. Fn. 2 E. S. Prentiss has a father born in MA and a mother born in VT. Fn. 3 V. Prentice might be a previously unidentified son of Harvey Prentice, EDB 14232. Harvey had a daughter, Zebela, whose unusual name is similar to the daughter, "Ziville". Fn. 4 Charles E. Prentiss also appears, unmarried, in the 1870 Dakota census. As indicated in Fn. 1, he might be the Charles A. Prentiss, age 2, shown in the 1850 Oregon, Dane, WI census, son of John B. Prentiss and his wife, Catherine. He also appears in the 1920 Vermillion, Clay, SD census. See the Fall 1998 Prentice Newsletter article. There is also Fn. 5 James D. Prentice is probably the same person as the James Prentice shown in the 1870 census as born in England. Fn. 6 Adam Prentice is shown in the 1880 Clarion Co., PA census with his wife, 2 children, and 4 additional children, 2 of whom (Ann L. and John W.) were born in NH in 1868 and 1869. Fn. 7 Anna, John's wife, may be surnamed Hewitt. A Minnie Hewitt, called John's sister in law, was living with them in the 1900 census. See also Fn. 15. Fn. 8 John H. Prentis appears in the 1880 Saginaw, Saginaw, MI census. He is the son of James H. and Mary C. Prentiss. James, b. c. 1847 in OH, may be the son of John and Amanda in the 1850 OH census. Fn. 9 Daniel Prentice may be a brother of James H. Prentis, Fn. 8 above, and the son of James H. and Mary C. Prentiss. James, b. c. 1847 in OH, may be the son of John and Amanda in the 1850 OH census. Fn. 10 Arthur C. Prentice has a wife, Della, whose maiden surname may be Jorlin. Step-children of that surname are living with Arthur and Della. Fn. 11 Charles Prentice appears in a Group Sheet, submitted to the LDS Salt Lake City Family History Center, relating to the family of Charley Prentice, born 30 Nov 1889 at Anita, Cass Co., IA. He married Maude Ham. Charles' father is identified by the Group Sheet as "L. Prentice." It seems likely that "L." may stand for "Leonard," the name of Charles' 3rd son. For more on Leonard Prentice, see the Winter 1997 article in our Prentice Newsletter. Fn. 12 Charles E. Prentice is likely the "Charles E. Prentis," b. c. 1874, who appears in the 1880 Dakota census, above, and in the 1900 Correctional, Woodbury, IA census. He is the son of Charles E. Prentis (b.c. 1847). For more about them, see Fn. 4, above. Fn. 13 Dexter J. Prentice, because of his unusual first name, may be a grandson of Dexter Prentice, 56/57X. See PRENTICE book Supplement. Fn. 14 Daniel K. Pentiss is the son of John A. Prentice and Aramantha/Amanda Hawes of Jefferson, Ashtabula, OH. John's was born c. 1810 in NY and his parents have not yet been identified. Fn. 15 John Prentiss also appears in the 1900 census. See also Fn. 7.
