Who are the parents of Mary M. Smith?

For now, we will assume that Mary M. Prentiss was "of Chenango Co., NY," and let's tentatively assume that she lived at home when she married about 1830.

The information that she was b. c. 1815 and the oldest son, Prentice George Lyon, was b. c. 1831. needs a of caution about an 1815 birth since she would have been only about 15 when she married and when her son may have been conceived for an 1831 birth.

In any event, we checked the 1830 Chenango Co., NY census.

The only Prentiss shown in that 1830 census was O. G. Prentiss of Smithville, Chenango Co., NY, who was between 40 and 49 years old. He is doubtless the same person as Ozias G. Prentice shown in the 1820 Oxford, Chenango Co., NY, census. "Find A Grave" shows Ozias G. Prentice d. 2 Jan 1853 in Chenango Co., NY.

The 1820 census shows only a single daughter and she was born before 1820 and was under 10 in 1820, The 1830 census shows a daughter 15-19 and born between 1811 and 1815. However, our own database shows Ozias had a daughter, Esther, b. 1812 who was under 10 [8] in 1820 and 15-19 [18] in 1830. so Ozias G. Prentiss does not seem to have a daughter named Mary.

We note, however, that the 1820 census spells Ozias' surname as "Prentice" while the 1830 census spells it as "Prentiss." Spelling changes were not uncommon in those early years. So, if we look to see how many spellings of "Prentice" we have in 1830, we find the following:

  1. Joel Prentice in our #93 in our John3 eBookJoel Prentice is of particular interest:
    1. Mary's first child, Prentice George Lyon, was b. 7 Jan 1831, Addison, Steuben Co., NY. Mary later died in 1874 in Addison, Steuben Co., NY.
    2. Joel Prentice, in our #93 in our John3 eBook, was in the 1810 census in Oxford, Chenango Co., NY. He had a daughter b. c. 1812, likely in Oxford, Chenango Co., NY. In 1820 both were in Oxford Chenango Co., NY. In 1830 both were in Addison, Steuben Co., NY, as was Mary and her son. An 1812 birth would be more reasonable than an 1815 birth for Mary.
    3. Joel had a son, name not yet known, who was born c. 1817. He also appears in the 1820 census in Addison, Steuben Co., NY.

By email of 31 Oct 2017, Jenniver Hanson notes that on 1820 film strip page 239 there appears a "David Lion." He was John Smith Lyon's uncle. John Smith Lyon was a blacksmith, as was this David Lyon/Lion. It seems possible that John Smith learned his trade from his uncle David. The fact that these Lyon and Prentice families are appear so close together is a good reason to start exploring any relation further.

  2. Joseph Prentice of Plymouth, Chenango Co., NY has 3 daughters 15-19 in 1830. He is #22 in our Stephen3 Prentice eBook. We do not show a daughter named Mary.
  3. David Prentice of Sherburne, Chenango Co., NY has 1 daughter 15-19 in 1830.
  4. E. B. Prentice of Oxford, Chenange Co., NY, has 1 daughter 10-14 in 1830.
  5. Walker Prentice. Born, 14 Dec 1784, in Woodbury, Litchfield, CT. Resided, circa 1800, in S. Plymouth?, Chenango, NY. He may be the "Col. Walker Prentiss" identified as an earlier settler of So. Plymouth, Chenango Co., NY who built the first mill. I have no information about any marriage or children.
  6. Elijah B. Prentice appears in Oxford, Chenango Co., NY with an indicated birth year of 1790-1800. I have no information about any marriage or daughters.

We have not solved any problems, just have raised possibilities.
