A Black Prentiss Family

1. Charles Prentiss Black, was b. c. 1924, OH , and d. before 2001. 1940 in Columbus, Franklin Co., OH. The 1940 census in Ancestry.com calls Charles and the others "Chinese." However, the original microfilm shows only a "C" for the race designation, not the required, "Chi". The 1930 census shows Charles and the others as Neg" for Negro.

It seems probable that the 1940 "C" was an unauthoriced notation for "Colored." The next several microfilm pages appear to confirm the foregoing; they contain an unexpectedly large number of "C" entries, but surprisingly no "Neg" entries; one would not expect to find so many Chinese and no Negro entries.

He m. Magdalene Jones, Black, b. c. 1924, OH, and d. before 2001. Dau. of Mary Jones, Black, b. c. 1908, KY. Presently known children of Charles and Magdalene:

  1. William Prentiss. Died before 2001.
  2. Donald Prentiss.
