Update of 5 Jul 2011: . Harry Prentice is #5iv in our Summer 2009 article entitled Thomas Prentice of Witham, Essex, England . That article now replaces this article.
We are helping John Scott Prentice of Greensville, Ontario, Canada in tracing his Prentice roots. Here is what we have so far:
1. Harry Prentice m. Mary. Both are deceased. They were born in England, but emigrated from England to Canada before 1928, but Mary returned to England so that their son, John, would be a British citizen.They had 3 or more children, including:
- John Anderson Prentice b. 1928. . . . . . . . . [2]
- Greta Prentice, living in 2007. She m. Mr. Andrews.
- Leslie Prentice, living in 2007.
2. John Anderson Prentice b. 1928 in Berwick Upon Tweed, Northumberland Co., England (see map). John and his wife had 1 or more children, including:
- John Scott Prentice, b. Feb 1955 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
We checked the 1901 England census, but did not find a Harry Prentice who was either born in, or a resident of, Berwick Upon Tweed.
We did, however, find the following persons and families association with Berwick Upon Tweed in census records and it seems likely that Harry Prentice is descended from one of those persons:
- Robert Prentice was b. c. 1843 in Scotland. He appears in the 1871 census in Berwick Upon Tweed,
Northumberland, with his wife, Jane, b. c. 1849, Scotland, and daughter:
- Agnes Prentice, b. 1871, Berwick Upon Tweed, Northumberland. At home in 1871.
Note: He is the same person as the Robert Prentice, b. c. 1843, who appears in Group 4 in our Spring 2007 article about Prentices of Coldingham, Berwickshire, Scotland .
- Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1847, Scotland. He appears in the 1861 and 1901 census in Berwick Upon Tweed with his wife, Elizabeth, b. c. 1863, Scotland.
- John Prentice was b. c. 1858 in Scotland. He appears in the 1891 and 1901 census in Berwick Upon Tweed, Northumberland,
with his wife, Barbara J.,, b. c. 1862, Scotland, brother, Alexander Prentice, b. c. 1866, Scotland,
and John's children:
- Jessica R. Prentice, b. c. 1890, Berwick Upon Tweed, Northumberland. At home in 1901.
- Edith S. Prentice, b. c. 1892, Berwick Upon Tweed, Northumberland. At home in 1901.
- John R. Prentice, b. c. 1894, Berwick Upon Tweed, Northumberland. At home in 1901.
- Alice R. Prentice, b. c. 1897, Berwick Upon Tweed, Northumberland. At home in 1901.
- William B. Prentice, b. c. 1900, Berwick Upon Tweed, Northumberland. At home in 1901.
- William Prentice, b. c. 1872, Scotland. He appears in the 1901 census in Berwick Upon Tweed with his wife,
Mary, b. c. 1872, Berwick Upon Tweed, and son:
- William Barton Prentice, b. 1901, Berwick Upon Tweed, Northumberland. At home in 1901.
