Hosea Prentice of New York and California

Hosea Prentice of New York and California
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2007 and Revised 30 Jul 2011

Update of 30 Jul 2011: Hosea Prentice is almost certainly #505 in our John3 eBook. That eBook now replaces this article.

1. Hosea Prentice was b. c. 1855 in New York with his parents b. in England. A farmer, he appears, indexed as "Hada Prentice" in the 1910 census in Oakland Ward 7, Alameda Co., California

He m. Susan. She was b. c. 1858, NY, with both parents b. in England. Children:

  1. Pearl Prentice, dau., b. c. 1884, NY. At home in Oakland, Alameda Co., CA in 1910 census. Not in 1920 or 1930 census by that surname.
  2. Oren Prentice, b. c. 1889, NY. At home in Oakland, Alameda Co., CA in 1910 census. Not in 1920 or 1930 census.
  3. Baron Prentice, b. c. 1891, NY. At home in Oakland, Alameda Co., CA in 1910 census. Not in 1920 or 1930 census.
  4. Alma Prentice, b. c. 1895, CA. At home in Oakland, Alameda Co., CA in 1910 census. Not in 1920 or 1930 census by that surname.

Who are Hosea Prentice's Parents?

Although it is tempting to think that Hosea Prentice is #505 in our John3 eBook because of the similarities in their family names, there are some differences:

  1. Hosea Prentice, #505, was b. 1851 in WI, not 1855 in NY.
  2. Hosea Prentice, #505, he is the son of Nathaniel Prentice, b. in WI and not England.
  3. Susan Wallace, wife of #505, was b. c. 1855 in NY and not c. 1858 in NY.
  4. Hosea Prentice, #505, is living in Merced, Fresno, CA, in the 1910 census. It appears probable that both Hosea and his son, Oren, were counted twice in the 1910 census, once in Oakland and again in Merced.

Hosea Prentice does one appear in a search of the LDS IGI and other records. Curiously, a search of the 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900 census does not show any Hosea Prentice b. c. 1855 in NY; that suggests the possibility that Hosea's English parents may have emigrated to Canada, lived for a time in NY in the 1850's, and then returned to Canada

We also tried a search of the 1880 census for any Prentice b. in NY with parents b. in England. but did not find any Hosea Prentice by any similar spelling.

Additionally, on the chance that it was also his father's first name, we did a search of Ancestry.com's England census records but did not find any Hosea Prentice by any spelling variation even though "Hosea" was a common first name.
