Emeline Prentice of NY and Quebec, Canada
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2007 and Revised 12 Nov 2007

Emeline Shaw Prentice is No. 43.1 in our Stephen-3 eBook. We are seeking descendant information. Here is what we have so far:

43.1 Emeline Shaw Prentice, b.1 Mar 1827, NY and d. 16 Feb 1909 in Black Capes, Quebec, Canada.

She m. Henry Gadd on 23 Aug 1844 in NY. Henry was b. 22 Feb 1818 in Chichester, England and d. 1 Jul 1866, Brooklyn, NY. It is unclear whether he is the Henry Gadd who appears in the 1841 census in Sub Deanary Civil Parish, Chichester Hundred, Sussex, as b. c. 1816, age 25, with his apparent wife, Kate Gadd, b. c. 1821, same place. He does not appear in the 1851 England census which is consistent with Henry having emigrated before his 1844 marriage to Emeline Shaw.

Emeline and Henry had 1 or more children, including:

  1. Alice Westen Gadd, b. 22 Jan 1859, NY. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [43.2]

We note that after Henry Gadd d. in 1866, an Emeline Johnston (b. c. 1830, NY) appears in the 1870 Brooklyn, NY, census with her husband, Nathaniel Johnston (b. c. 1843, Quebec per 1881 census). At some date before 1881, Emeline and her family moved to New Richmond, Bonaventure, Quebec, Canada, where they appear in the 1881 census. Children per 1870 census and 1881 Canada census:

  1. Mare(?) Johnston, b. c. 1870, NY
  2. Richard Gadd, b. c. 1851, NY. At home in Quebec in the 1881 census.
  3. Fanny/Fannie Gadd, b. c. 1855, NY. At home in Quebec in the 1881 census.
  4. Alice Gadd, b. c. 1860, NY. She may be the Alice Westen Gadd, shown above as the daughter of Emeline and Henry. At home in Quebec in the 1881 census.
  5. Arthur Gadd, b. c. 1867, USA, Seaman. At home in Quebec in the 1881 census.

43.2 Alice Westen Gadd, b. 22 Jan 1859, NY and d. 19 May 1923 in Market Harbourough, Leies, England.

  1. William Archibald Campbell, b. 8 Dec 1891 or 1892. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [43.3]

43. 3 William Archibald Campobell, b. 8 Dec 1891 or 1892 in New Richmond, Quebec, Canada and d. 20 Dec 1972 in Montreal, Canada.

He m. Alfrieda/Elfrieda Lucie Elizabeth Young ( Scott?) who was b. 4 Oct 1900, NY and d. 28 Feb 1968 (as Freida Fowler, second marriage to Thomas Henry Fowler). William and Elfrieda's children:
