1. William Prentice was b. c. 1826 in Sewardstone, Essex, England . Sewardstone lies about 20 miles WSW of Chelmsford and a few miles from central London.
William apparently lived in Sewardstone until about 1860 when his last known daughter, Mary Ann, was born. Two years later he appears in the 1861 census in Waltham Holy Cross in Essex. We did not find that place in our map, but we did see that Sewardstone lies just south of Waltham Abbey, perhaps the same place.
Ten years later, William appears In the 1871 census in Edmonton, Middlesex, not far SW of Sewardstone, William appears with his wife, Sarah, b. c. 1831, Sewardstone, and children:
- George W. Prentice, b. c. 1858, Sewardstone. At home in 1871.
- Mary Ann Prentice, b. c. 1860, Sewardstone. At home in 1871.
None of the family appears appear in the 1881 and later census.
Although only a guess for now, William Prentice's parents might be John Prentice (b. c. 1800, Enfield, Middlesex) and Sarah, b. c. 1799, Sewardstone, Essex) who in 1851 were also living in Sewardstone. Also living with the family was Sarah Prentice, perhaps John's mother, who was b. c. 1752, Hertfordshire.
